Road condition out of Yosemite

I have a 39' motorhome with a toad. I am planning on taking 120 east out of Yosemite towards Utah. Can anyone advise as to the road conditions.

  • I see you're from Florida. So it won't be anything like Florida. Highway 120 climbs to right at 10,000 feet at the Tioga Pass. The road is narrow in spots, and very windy, but easily doable in a motorhome. I've taken my DP over it several times with a Dodge Dakota toad and I did not unhook. Just used the jake brake and it was fine. If you've never been over Tioga Pass, I suggest making an entire day out of the trip just getting from Yosemite Valley to 395. There are some great sights to see along the way.

Last time I went to Salt Lake about a year ago I took 120 over Tioga and then Highway 6 all the way through Nevada. Highway 50 is known as The loneliest road in the nation, but it is an expressway compared to Highway 6. I drove for an hour between seeing other cars. I thought it was a great drive.
  • And great ice cream at Mono Cone in Lee Vining, just north of the Shell station.
  • x2 on the food at the gas station at the bottom of the grade. It's the Whoa Nellie Deli.
  • Go slow & when you get to 395 go to the Mobile Station
    for great food!
  • If you head North on 395, you can go see Mono Lake and the Ghost town of Bodie and take US 50 to Utah and see Great Basin National Park on your way. Have a Great Trip!

  • Used this route in June on my way to Lee Vining. Only issue is the 7 or so miles of about 8% grade going down to 395. Really have to use low gears or you will smoke the brakes. If I had a engine brake it would be a piece of cake. With just an exhaust brake I have to really drive smart. While that was my 3rd time down the grade, each time is an adventure.
  • There are lots of turn outs, too -- nice and big and easy to see, well in advance! After you get down the hill, what route are you planning to take across Nevada to Utah? (You can't go wrong, really.)
  • Good road but steep. Use lower gears. Some MH's unhook the toad to lighten the load. Be prepared for bicyclists that don't use the bike lane and confuse traffic. Have a smooth trip.
  • We were in Yosemite a couple weeks ago, but only went east as far as Tuolomne Meadows. The road was fine although narrow at times and no construction. I don't know about further east.
