Rocky Point end of January 2014

I am thinkin of going to Rocky Point in Jan '14 from Quartzsite, Yuma.

I have a tow car and have heard pro's and cons of bringing it with me. If not where would I leave it for a week or so? how would I get
around if I stay at the Reef.. is that the best place I am 63 single female. If I have no car can I get into town.. how?
Do you think I would be safe.. I'm going to try and get some LOW's or
SKIPS in Q to go.. Last year a bunch bout 20 went and i didn't.. kicking myself now.. they had a blast.

Also thinking of going from Yuma.. to Gila Bend, Why and Ajo, take a couple days siteseeing then cross at Lukesville.. is that a good plan?
Thanks,

  • We traveled by RV and towed car over 20,000 miles in Mexico, but probably less than 1,000 miles in close proximity to another known traveler. Most of our travel was to the south of Guadalajara. We felt uneasy only a few times, once going north a day's drive from Texas, the farthest east we'd been. Mexican police had stopped to warn us to keep everything locked up. That feeling evaporated immediately when another Canadian rig joined us at the Pemex overnight and more so when we found we had friends in common.
  • No, but further south it is a good idea, even if its just someone to go for help if you break down so you don't have to aboadon your rig. Of course if you are on the main highway you just wait for theGreen angels.

When you head to Rocky Point, keep a few basic precautions in mind:

    1. Always plan your travel so you are off the road by night fall.
    2. Make 100% sure you have ZERO bullets or guns in your rig. If you are caught with even one bullet, you can wind up in a Mexican prison.
    3. Do not camp in a remote area by yourself. Always try to travel and camp in groups.
    4. Make sure you have your passport with you at all times. Make a copy of your passport and keep it in a safe place in case you have to go to the U.S. Consulate for a replacement.
    5. Make sure you have a copy of any prescriptions you have, and keep all prescriptions in their original bottles.
    6. Before you cross the border, purchase Mexican auto/RV insurance. Keep two sets of the documents in separate locations. If you lose one set, you'll have a back up.

There are many precautions you can take to assure your safety in Mexico. In my travels there, I've had very good experiences. Here are a few good websites to check out:

Excellent post but I do disagree with the need to travel in groups. There is not a need to travel in a group to Rocky Point. As safe as traveling to Phoenix or Tucson, LOL! :B

  • Take your toad and have a ball. You will have a great time. A couple of years ago we meet friends in Quartzsite for a week and then we all caravan to Rocky Point in Jan. Easy trip, just make sure you purchase Mexico insurance (internet or Ajo, AZ as you pass thu).

  • Congrats on at least trying Mexico. I am not crazy about Rocky Point or the RV Parks there, but I am comparing it to the better places further south. Beats Yuma, IMO. However, its a good introduction to RVing in Mexico. From your description, it sounds like an RV caravan would suit you if you can afford one. Some will give a lower rate for singles (if they have room) and most mainland ones include Copper Canyon and go as far as Mazatlan or even Puerto Vallarta. Nice & safe for a single woman and lots of social contact, which is what I get the sense you are looking for.

There are a few operating on the mainland and a couple in Baja that have trips in Jan to Mar. From 30 days to over 60 days

    Adventure

    Caravanas de Mexico

    Fantasy

    Baja Amigos

    Baja Winters.

I think Escapees also run one.

I saw at least 3 single women RVing in Mexico last year as far south as Guadalajara. I suspect few have that sort of bravery with all the negative stories you hear about Mexico, but it does show that it is possible.
  • We went twice, years ago, with a tour group. I cannot imagine staying at the Reef without a toad. The town, restaurants, everything, is a drive away.
