Roseburg to Crater Lake OR RT138

I'm heading to Crater Lake NP Monday and I've read OR RTE. 58 is under heavy construction. How Is the road travel on OR RTE 138 from Roseburg to Crater Lake? Any switch backs or steep hills? I have 36' DP with a car in tow. Is there an exit for RTE 138 off of I-5?
Thanks, in advance!

  • Hwy 58 DOES have construction at the Salt Creek tunnel. We've traveled it a lot lately. Mostly they do the work at night, but they DO hold traffic and use a pilot truck (using 1 lane) according to what they've been doing. We've taken a big rig on both routes with no problem. We prefer Hwy 58 .......wider, more passing lanes, less traffic. Hwy 138......more scenic for sure. :)
  • I drove 138 from Roseburg to Diamond Lake where we camped for a few days. Day tripped to Crater Lake. Lots of waterfalls on or just off 138. Hope you have time to see some of them.
Nothing alarming comes to mind about the route.
There is an exit for 138 off I-5. Would have to look at the map to get the #.
  • I wouldn't say HWY 58 is under "heavy" construction. All that is going on is a little work on the tunnel and the road is closed from 8pm to 6am Monday-Thursday I believe.

As far as HWY 138, there is an exit in Roseburg, however it takes you right through downtown. If you have a bigger setup, I would recommend taking exit 125, then turn right on HWY 99 and go about a mile south to Hwy 138.

Both are nice routes, I would say Hwy 58 is a much easier pull as far as width of the road goes, however I would say 138 is the more scenic route.
