We took I-88 to I-81 on our way to Florida from upstate NY, and then I-77 through Charlotte, NC. We stayed at the Ft Chiswell RV Park near Max Meadows, VA before jumping on I-77. It's a great overnight spot just off I-81 only a mile or two south of the I-77 junction, and very quiet.
That looks good thanks, - leaddogExplorerI assume your Mountaire has a Jake or engine brake. Coming down into NC from VA on I-77 is a long downhill run and you will need the brake to slow you down. It shouldn't be a problem, just giving you a heads up.
Enjoy the races. - HandbasketExplorerX2 on I-77. One long grade almost at the VA-NC line, down the eastern continental divide. it has great views much of the way down if the weather's clear (drive, and let the copilot record it for later ;)). Nice welcome station in NC just past the bottom; I've overnighted there several times a few years back. Traffic thickens bunches after the I-40 crossing every time I've been that way.

I-77 south to I-85 East is the best route to Concord, NC from I-81.
Keep in mind that mid May is a very busy camping time in the Concord area with the NASCAR race going on. Campsites area at a premium around the middle to late May timeframe. The Sprint showdown is May 16 and other lessor races around that time and later. The big race is on May 25 this year.
Good luck.
Thanks, the race is my objective and have a place to stay.:) and 77 looks good. - leaddogExplorerI-77 south to I-85 East is the best route to Concord, NC from I-81.
