Rt-17 / I86 in NY

It's been 15 years since I was on this road between Corning and Binghamton. Has any expressway been added, or is it still 2-lane?
  • It is all now interstate. I drive it frequently. Good highway condition, no stopping or left hand turns through Elmira/Horseheads areas. The Corning bypass is beginning to get a little rough after 15 plus years but still OK.
  • Is there still construction at the interchange with 81?
That was a mess at times this summer
  • It a highway, yes, but good condition?
With a car, you almost fall into the holes, with my class C, I just couldn't wait to get off!
  • Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I'll need to head from the South of Buffalo to Northern PA just below Corning. The most direct route I see takes me on I-86 between Bath and Corning. The last few times I took I-86 (multiple sections between Binghamton through Jamestown into PA) I thought it was going to shake the motorhome apart most of the time. The only way to make it bearable in some places was to slow down to 40 and move to the left lane (and move back over and take a beating when traffic started coming up on me.)

The last time I took it was about 5 years ago, and I vowed never to do it again. :E

This thread has some conflicting comments:

My experience has been like Greydennyhawk's but maybe they improved it over the years and it's now more like the therink's assessment?

Have they made any improvements over the last few years, there or on any sections? Can any part of that road be driven in a motorhome without causing major seismic damage?

What are the current road surface conditions?
