Rt. 17 Chesapeake Va

I am going to Myrtle and would like to take 17 down. What can I expect? I am considering this for nostalgic reasons. I haven't been o it in 30 years, and I would like to check out some of the sights that I missed back then.

We have done it a couple of times from Northern Neck VA.. Always a bummer clearing NewPort News and Norfolk and then you still don't get to see anything of the Ocean until you get down to Jacksonville NC.

We have taken I95 down and then angle over to Wilmington and pick up 17 there and follow on into North Myrtle Beach.

Here lately we have been staying at LAKEWOOD RESORT since my sister has a place there now and will take I95 down to South of the Border near Dillon and angle over to pick up 301/501 and follow 501 into Myrtle Beach which comes out on 17 just a block south of LAKEWOOD... Great for pulling a trailer and missing congestion towns...

  • I've done it from Colonial Williamsburg down to Myrtle Beach. I usually go back to I-95 when I'm headed south, but I wanted to drive thru the Great Dismal Swamp. Beautiful drive, but I wouldn't like to do it on foot. Pretty dismal.
A bunch of us guys used to do a MB golf trip every year. MB was a let down as well. Many of the courses (and bars) are gone.

Depending on where you pick up Rt. 17, Dominion Blvd. in Chesapeake south of I-64 is under construction as they build a new bridge over the canal. Traffic there is a mess. I would suggest finding a detour for that short area.
  • Knowing the ongoing construction, I would recommend routing yourself down 95 and come over in NC. We travel in a B, enjoy the stopping etc., Tidewater is never a part of our travels. Safe travels.
