RV Insurance in Canada and Mexico

We will be setting off on a year-long RV trek of North America in 2019. While we're planning to spend most of our time in the U.S., we would like to visit Canada, and have also talked about traveling in Baja California in Mexico.

Are there any insurance issues we should be concerned with if we take our RV out of the U.S.? Are there any other issues we should worry about (we don't know what we don't know)?

Thanks for your help on this.
  • Mexico requires buying Mexican insurance. You can buy it in the US ahead of time.
  • You should have travel medical insurance, especially for Canada. I have heard of people not getting it for Mexico as some of the costs can be much lower, we have always had it though on our trips there.
Weapons are a problem into both countries. I'm not sure if there are any exceptions into Mexico, but into Canada it is possible to take rifles & shotguns with the correct documentation and reasons given at the border.
You should also check customs regulations for foodstuffs. We've had steaks taken from us at the Mexican border and fruits taken from us when entering the US.
  • Documentation for any pets, credit card travel authorizations for travel outside your home state/country, how much cash you can take in, whether your Roadside Assistance program covers you in Mexico/Canada.

Check restrictions on what you can take into the countries - changes from fresh fruit and meats to pet food. Can take very limited liquor into Canada. You will need to check just before you try to enter or return to the US.

Does your health insurance/supplemental cover you or do you need to buy a additional coverage. Vehicles definitely will need Mexican Insurance before entry.

Extra parts you might want to carry such as gas/oil filters, spark plugs, etc

I am sure wiser ones will continue o answer here. Sounds like a grand adventure that you are planning well for. Have a super trip.
