San Francisquito Canyon Road California

I will be traveling from Castiac Junction, CA on I5 to Red Rock State Park on Hwy 14. Rather than take Hwy 14 through Palmdale and Lancaster, there is a route through San Francisquito Canyon which passes through Elizabeth Lake and would put us back on Hwy 14 north of Lancaster. We like the back roads and it is 15 miles shorter. Anyone driven this route? 2500HD pulling a 25 foot TT.

Thank you and safe travels.

  • Thanks SCVJeff. Kinda what I thought. I have taken the route you suggest in the past and will stick with it.

    Thanks again and safe travels.
  • That's a long 2 lane road, lots of curves and level changes.. it's a mountain road that is a favorite with bikers. There is a reason I've lived here for 35 years and never taken an RV in these hills. If you want to add a few extra hours and lots of stress to your trip, then have fun. You are way over complicating an otherwise simple trip.

Suggest you look at CURRENT maps of Santa Clarita, take the 126 until it turns into Newhall Ranch Road, that will turn into Golden Valley, and back onto the 14
  • Thank you. I will be approching Castic Junction from Ventura on Hwy 126 so Hwy 138 is not a good option for me.

    Safe travels.
  • One of the things I like about going up I5 on the grapevine to the 138 at Gorman is you avoid Palmdale and Lancaster traffic. 138 is a decent two lane road through the valley which connects back to the 14.
  • Me I would cut over on Hwy 138 off the 5, just before Gorman.
  • Not exactly that road, but one road over - Lake Hughes Road from Antelope Valley to Castaic Lake. Wowsies! I felt like I had left the known world as the road twisted and wound through apparently uninhabited mountains for miles. Nice adventure. Road mostly in good condition when I was there last month. Steep on the Castaic Lake end; perhaps your road will be also. I'll bet that these roads attract biker and sports car groups on weekend, so keep that in mind.
