Might avoid this on the way in - Slumgullion Pass. :)

MAP - on this route going to it would allow a visit to Sedona - then Canyon de Chelly, take the guided tour - Then up RT 550 towards Durango then on towards Pagosa Springs on RT 160 going on to RT 149 to Creede.

Hope this helps - after a season there you will be Experts on SouthWestern Colorado - Lake City and the Alpine Loop will hopefully Be on your day Trips.

Your thoughts are well-noted.

By "best" I mean... since this is our first big trip (we've done some short hauls (less than 200 miles), I just don't want to wind up like Desi in the movie "The Long, Long Trailer".

I've had to back up 1,000 ft and made a U-turn in an intersection in San Diego so I'm not scared of pulling the rig. We want to see beauty and just avoid dangerous roads.

Think you can tell that a lot more info is needed to give REAL HELP.

If you could fill out the Info so we know what you are IN that would help.

As this is your first Post it is likely that this is also your first Trip?.

My Best would not Be YOUR Best - for sure - as I love the Mountains and Will go Out of My way to get to that Next Pass. :)

In the Colorado Mountains Spring is usually Late (after Memorial Day) and Fall is Usually Early (Right after Labor Day) so your trip needs to keep that in mind. A Date would Help.

As for a route I'll post a Map with MANY Options along the way to and from - so YOU will need to pick from the list not try to do the list on the first Trip!

I've included many options and most are in areas free from SNOW in the spring, BUT as you gain elevation things will change, so keep that in Mind.

Three places I'd try to see would be Canyon de Chelly - Monument Valley - Mesa Verde - of course the Grand Canyon if you have never been.

I would probably do this 900 miles in two days with a stop in Williams Grand Canyon RV park.

“Best” is hard for me to define. Beauty, fast trip, interesting, Interstate, cooler etc.?

What criteria do you use for a best route?
