- wanderingbobExplorer IIThe signs are for liability reasons , I stay in all southern states with no problems . It would not be a capitol offense , what can they do , ask ya to move !
We get this question over and over , most RVs will stay and have no problems .
A big scam in the Carolina,s now is for a guy to wake you up and say , " my wife and kids are out here on the interstate and I need twenty six dollars for a shop to bring one out and install it , can you help me out ? ".I just push the Panic button on my key fob for several seconds and they will slip away . - wbwoodExplorerNC says no overnight parking and stays of 4 hours or less. But there are rest areas (one on each side of I-77 near mile marker 39/40) and I can tell you that people do stay overnight for longer than the 4 hrs. I will pass by on my way to work at night and often see an RV there (sometimes with a slide or two out). About 10 or 11 hours later on my way home, the same one is still sitting there. The highway is patrolled by highway patrol all the time in that area. So they must not say much about it.
- SkylarkExplorerI stayed overnight at rest stop on I26 on NC -SC border southbound. There were signs saying no overnights, but workers there said you would not be bothered. There were 8 - 10 revs there and 10 or so trucks. Sky
This was in August 2013 - dcasonExplorerWe talked to a worker in SC rest area and asked him about staying overnight. He said they put up the no overnighting signs so that they
can ask people to move on if they are a problem. We have stayed in the rest areas many times in all states on 95 with no problems. - artguysExplorerWeigh stations will allow short to overnight parking in all states...some weigh stations do have limited parking though.

I'm not sure how up-to-date that link is. On our trip to Utah and back in Summer of 2012, the Rest Areas along I-80 in Iowa were signed to allow overnight parking. In fact, it was at the R/S in Adair that we decided it was too loud with all the trucks, and moved on to the Walmart in Atlantic, about 40 miles down the road.
Try this link for rest areas
http://www.jmhare.com/Vacation2012/Vacation_Day2.htm - HandbasketExplorerIt's been 3-4 years ago, but I've stayed overnight at SC rest areas on I-26 several times. But I know the SC welcome center on I-26 at the NC/SC border is signed for no overnight parking.
Some of VA's rest areas on I-81 are 'way too small, which may explain some of the 'no overnighting' signs. But I've come thru the one a bit south of Roanoke in the wee small hours (3-5 AM), and it was very obvious from the dew on the cars that they'd been there all night.
Jim, "If things get any worse, I'll have to ask you to stop helping." - We_Cant_WaitExplorerI can understand Va making you move on being as (as of 5yrs ago) Va had a law that only allowed 4 hr stay at ANY rest area, this included ALL commercial trucking too. Many a truck driver was told to move on!
- dahkotaExplorerIn March we slept overnight in a SC rest area on 95. No one told us to leave.
- KountryguyExplorerI was chased from one in PA on I-80. Also asked to move on from one in VA. I now try to avoid those states.
