- msmith1199Explorer IIMonterey isn't really Southern CA, but you can get to So Cal from there. You weren't very specific on the intent of your journey. If you want to stay near the Coast then you'll be taking Highway 1 from Monterey which stays along the coast. It is also two lanes and very twisty. As long as you're a confident driver and not afraid of heights you can do it. Don't be scared off by people who think it isn't for RV's. The only prohibition is motorhomes over 40' can't be on it.
If you're going in the summer, I would suggest avoiding Highway 1 on weekends. There is a lot of traffic on the weekends and you may find yourself pulling into turnouts more than you are on the road. Once you get down past San Luis Obispo then you're fine on Highway 1, but you'll be in So Cal traffic. - kalynzooExplorerDon't do it. Going south you have shear drops into the rocks with tight curves...you see your own taillights. Great in a small car, with the rv take the 101.
- huffazExplorer IITake HWY 101, not PCH 1. 101 is fine for RV's.
- mustangglpExplorerI is very curvey great fun in my mustang gt! I would avoid it with the 5th wheel. Plan on 20 miles an hour around some of the curves while holding up traffic and not being able to enjoy the views.
Might be worth it if you have reservation at one of the beautiful campgrounds in the big sur area and can unhook an explore some :@ - PCH (1) gets narrow as you approach Los Angeles. Very crowded with beach traffic.
Long Beach to Newport Beach is not bad. Laguna Beach to Dana Point becomes narrow again and full of gridlock traffic.
Then you will be on the 5 interstate through Camp Pendleton. San Diego area I am not as familiar.
Do you have a particular destination or list of sights to see? - azdryheatExplorerVery twisty roads. Possible motion sickness issues. Wife and I did it on our Goldwing and it was great. Wife said she'd never do it on 4 wheels due to motion sickness.
- DaveG39ExplorerI have traveled it four times with 33 ft then 35 ft motorhome towing car with no problem. Slow around many curves but easily negotiable. Then, I have not driven 5er and don't know how they track vs motorhome and towed car.
