Stewart/Hyder

We're planning to drive down the Cassiar this October. Never been to Hyder before. Are there any 'must see/must do' items to put on my list? (Other than bears?)

Thanks,

Bob
  • We live in Alaska, so we can take or leave glaciers. We know it's late in the season, but don't really need much in the way of services. Mildly concerned that the Milepost says "unlawful to camp overnight in pullouts and rest areas". But, since everything will be closed, I'm guessing they won't really be enforcing that. If we see bears, we see them. Getting started this late, we're mostly making a "mad dash" south, but have never done the Cassiar or Hyder. Last time we went out, we were 2 weeks earlier. And, saw lots of bears along the highway.

Thanks to all for the ideas.

  • If you are in the area (driving down the highway)...why would you not at least go and look? If there is snow on the road up to the glacier, turn around. It's not like it's going to sneak up on a person. Especially if the weather is nice, the drive into Stewert and Hyderis really pretty.

  • Much of Hyder will be closed in October.

Meziadin Lake provincial park campground shows as being closed then too. I expect the campgrounds in Stewart will be the same.

Salmon Glacier is a worthy visit. However, in October it is possible there will be snow at the higher elevations. The road is not maintained up to the glacier viewpoint. Being a coastal area, the snow can be deep and wet up there.

I'm thinking even the bears will be in the hills settling in for winter hibernation.
  • I would definitely call ahead to any campgrounds to make sure they are open. October is pretty late in the season, many close after Labor Day weekend...

Good place to eat is at the "Bus", really not much to look at but the owner really knows how to cook seafood. Try the "captains plate", the food was better than many places we tried on our recent trip to CA, and she only uses fresh seafood. Rainy Creek CG is good camping in Stewart.

  • It is a very pretty drive with glaciers and waterfalls cascading down the mountains. If you go out past the bear viewing station it turns into a rough gravel road, but Salmon Glacier is quite nice and is right along the road and you can look down on it. We did not go back this year to the glacier, but did go back to the bear viewing. Saw more black bear on the way to and from than we saw at the viewing platform. Did see one black and one grizzly at the platform. We leave the 5th wheel at Mezidian Lake. I never spell it right but easy to find on the map on the Cassiar Hwy and drive back to Hyder. A nice place to park right on the lake.
  • The street in Hyder has been paved; all the way to the bear viewing platform.
  • If you are continuing east on Hwy 16 the Village of Fraser Lake has free pull thru campsites right on the lake.
