  • Another fan of Route 26 here. If you aren't in a big hurry, Fort Laramie and the Oregon Trail wagon ruts aren't too far west of the 85/26 junction at Lingle. Route 26 also passes Chimney Rock a bit east of Scotts Bluff.

Also a fan of route 30 across Nebraska. A bit slower than I80, but no trucks and few cars - IMO a much more relaxed drive.

We have used Country View Campground in Ogalalla and Holiday RV Park in North Platte in past trips.

If you are interested in railroads, the largest rail yard in the world is in North Platte. The Golden Spike Tower provides great views of the yard activity.

WY 585 to US 85, then south all the way to Torrington WY, where you can pick up US 26 and take that east through Scottsbluff NE and on to Ogallala. There you can either take US 30 or I-80 to North Platte.

Good road the entire way. It's a whole big empty from Newcastle to Lusk, about 80 miles of high prairie and no services, including limited cell phone service. You'll also be dropping some in elevation, sort of down hill to the Torrington area -- no mountains on this route, just a gradual decrease. Dropping further in elevation from Torrington to North Platte. Better fuel mileage going this route than doing it the opposite direction.

Be aware of the (likely) potential for windy conditions as you head south. That's going to be true of most any place in Wyoming though.
