I personally would not bother with a rifle unless I had specific plans to hunt in Alaska. Even then, I would probably think twice. (Actually, it would not be a long thought for me at present, as a bolt action 22 is rather underpowered for much Alaskan game.)
Hornet spray is a terrible substitute for mace or pepper spray, just as pepper spray is not a very good alternative for getting rid of hornets. It's rather more likely to be actually harmful to people (although most are compounded to be relatively safe for humans while still being not safe for hornets), and less likely to debilitate through irritation, and at least in the US it's a federal crime to use it for other than its intended use. I think that bear spray, specifically marked as such, is generally not prohibited from Canada, but please don't imagine I'm an expert on such things.
