There's an old and relative saying: "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6". In today's violent and irresponsible America you have to be a complete fool to not have the means to defend yourself. Under the US constitution a citizen has the right to own a legal weapon and to defend themselves against aggression. If you are not comfortable with a handgun in your RV then, by all means, have a shotgun or rifle available. Also, another thing to think about. Many people take RV's out into the wilderness. How are you going to protect yourself against wild animals, many of which have no fear of humans. Good luck with a baseball bat or pepper spray against either drugged out thugs or a Mountain Lion.
That complete idea all goes away the minute you step across the boarder.
I will give the Canadians their due. We have been to Canada many times, we camped remote most every time we go north, Never have I felt threatened by man or animals.
Their road signs are not shot full of holes, their roads by the most part are better than ours, and not cluttered by rubbish.
the best rule to follow is simple, it is their country, abide by their laws. and you'll have a great time.
