In 2005, I took 2 shotguns with me to AK. Spent 3 months hunting grouse, ptarmigan and ducks. I had all the paperwork filled out before we (dog and I) hit the border. Agents were great - I volunteered to empty the trailer and show them the guns locked up in a gun case and chained to the trailer. They said "no problem". Coming back was just as easy - was even allowed to use the same permit because "I was close".
Since we hunt with 20 ga and deep in the woods, I had my FFL ship a 44 mag to a FFL in Tok. Picked it up there and then shipped it back from Tok. Never needed it but my friends who live in AK have had to fire warning shots to chase off bears ans moose in the past.
I agree with other posters that respecting Canadian and US laws is mandatory and being respectful and making the agents jobs safe and easy gets you a long way.
Of course, that was 2005.
