We live in the wilderness of Yukon and have never needed a rifle to protect ourselves from wildlife. We have a couple of local grizzlies, but they keep their distance. Same with the coyote and wolves, although the wolves killed an elk on our driveway last year. I grew up near Beaver Creek, Yukon, and again, never needed a gun for protection in the 1960s and 1970s.
We could travel with our hunting rifles, but don't bother taking them with us because we don't feel the need to have them with us when we're camping. I did have to use my camera's monopod to push of a porcupine once, but that's it.
Be sure to take your camera though...
