I will make one suggestion. If you carry a bolt action, pull the bolt and carry it in the bottom of your pack when you are away from the camper without the gun/rifle (a few bolt action shotguns out there). You cannot stop a thief when you are gone, but with the cost of a new bolt, barrel set back and rechamber, you can destroy the economic value of the rifle to the thief. This is also a good safety measure around children.
If you carry the rifle for bear, please practice a lot, because a wounded animal is dangerous to others. In a lifetime of hunting I have only shot once in self defense against an animal, and that was in Africa where they come big and fast. I once thought I would have to kill a black bear sow with a cub, then I remembered that they often have twins and sure enough I was between junior (probably a boy) and mom. So think and stay out of trouble, don't push animals. Also pray that you never need to try the spray or a gun, it usually means you made an error of judgement.
