Taking a gun....worth hassle?

We're leaving in a couple weeks, from Oklahoma to Alaska for the summer. Our first rv trip through Canada. Super excited!! Planning to mostly boondock.....
I know you can take a rifle in with proper documentation, etc....is it a hassle crossing the border in and out of Canada? Thoughts and comments please.....
Thanks everyone for all the great posts, pictures and advice given on these forums.....as newbies we sure do appreciate and enjoy them!

Look it up on their website.

You can transport much larger quantities through Canada with the proper paper work, etc. Look up "in-transit" requirements. I decided not to do this but the option is available.

It all depend on what you consider a hassle.
You could sail through without a hitch or have to sit there for three hours while they strip search the RV, then let you pass.

That's it. filling out the forms, and paying the fee, isn't much of a hassle to me.

We usually carry a 12 gauge slug gun. $25 and we are on our way.

Three things to hand the boarder agent.
your passports, dogs rabies certificate, and the gun import forms.
  • Depending upon your plans you could be making several border crossings between Alaska and Canada and in fact it would be a shame not to visit SE Alaska. Also once you take a rife or otherwise have a firearm history like a LEO you are much more likely to be questioned and searched on future trips.

  • I personally would not bother with a rifle unless I had specific plans to hunt in Alaska. Even then, I would probably think twice. (Actually, it would not be a long thought for me at present, as a bolt action 22 is rather underpowered for much Alaskan game.)

Hornet spray is a terrible substitute for mace or pepper spray, just as pepper spray is not a very good alternative for getting rid of hornets. It's rather more likely to be actually harmful to people (although most are compounded to be relatively safe for humans while still being not safe for hornets), and less likely to debilitate through irritation, and at least in the US it's a federal crime to use it for other than its intended use. I think that bear spray, specifically marked as such, is generally not prohibited from Canada, but please don't imagine I'm an expert on such things.

As long as you are going it AK... shotgun/rifle for hunting. IF you are just going into Canada you need to say you are going to AK as they will make you ship it home and show proof that you did ship it before being allowed in... friend had all the paperwork and learned this the expensive way as he was not going to AK.

Mase and pepper spay are not allowed but 25' hornet spray is, especially if it's in a lower compartment. When they stripped searched my rig several years ago they did not open a single storage bay. Got hassled because my guess of 15 beers was off by 3 and had to pay duty on several bottles of wine which I had accurately declared. Other times saying I had my normal bar passed me through.
