Taking an RV to Alaska

Every RV bought in Alaska by Alaskan's comes up the Alaska Highway, it's done by thousands of RV's every year all year. I prefered the winter drive, less traffic and no road construction.

Have drove it 3X pulling 35ft 5ver.. no problems.. take your time and enjoy.

I think you can tell by now that the drive to Alaska is an easy one IF you take it slow and enjoy the scenery and critters along the highways. Yes, there are construction areas but then, there are those kinds of areas in the lower 48.

We did not have any damage to the windshield, our 40' motorhome or the towed Jeep. We bought all new tires in Oregon (no sales tax) before our trip as they were six years old.

We've been up and back several times, we've never gotten a rock chip.
I've had a flat tire, picked up a #2 phillips apex tip in the city of Fairbanks. never a problem on the highway.

Best advice I can offer is don't feel any pressure to drive the speed limit. Drive for the conditions and for the love of your RV.

Hubby hates rattling the fifth wheel around so he cruises along at about 40 mph, on occasion up to 50 mph. On the 120 miles between Destruction Bay & Beaver Creek, we plan for a four hour drive. The road is too unpredictable. On one of our trips (we often visit Beaver Creek because it is my hometown), we travelled behind motorcyclists also driving at 30 mph. One of them had hit a huge pothole and damaged his bike, so they were taking their time.

If someone whips up behind us, we simply pull over and let them pass.

In my little car, I'll whip along at 70 mph. BUT I know the road and it brakes in a short distance, and swerves exceptionally well.

Good idea to lower your deductible for comprehensive part of your coverage before heading up. Replacing a windshield for $50 is not so bad for a great trip.

The best thing about going slow the entire route is the scenery. The road conditions are good enough to drive fast but why do it. We saw some amazing sights while I was keeping an eye out for the bad spots, bears, mountains, rivers etc.

For most Alaska is the destination. The journey thru Canada is amazing, slow down and enjoy the journey.

We went last year. The Alaska Hwy. is always going have some problems, nature of the beast. We followed the advice shared here by others, go slow, watch for the flags, wiggly center lines and skid marks they are a clear indicator of bad spots.
Last summer was pretty dry so our journey was probably better than Summer's where they have lots of rain. Weather will make it interesting all by itself, but it's
well worth the trip.
Just remember take your time, drive under existing conditions and watch out for the other guy.

I was there last spring/summer and drove up the Alaska Hwy and down the Cassiar. Of course, with my rig I was able to take many interesting back roads, which you could not. But if you stay on the main highways you will have no trouble. I found the worst (highway) frost heaves on the Tok and the Taylor but you needn't take those. Some frost heaves are bad enough to pitch your rig off the road if you're not alert. Watch for squiggly center lines.

Most of the highway conditions were superior to those in the lower 48 but the Yukon stretch mentioned above was many miles of mud and gravel and not a lot of fun. It may be finished by next year.

Most of the road until after Whitehorse can be run at 60mph except the bridge approaches. After Whorse it's permafrost so following someone a couple hundred yards back to see how much they bounce on the frost heaves will help smooth things out. Many of the businesses have gone out of business as you can make 500+ miles/day if you want to.
