Tucson down to Texas. San Antonio, Corpus & Houston

Hi all
We are over here from the UK and are currently in Tucson (lovely warm days mmmm). My Wife and I have both always wanted to visit Texas.
Looking at the map, the places we would like to see are San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Houston, or any combination of.
We are here for another 7 weeks and plan to leave Tucson the day after the holiday day on Jan 19.
Looking at the distance from Tucson to SA it looks like a couple of stop overs for us (we generally do about 300/350 miles a day, I know, lightweights!:)
So El Paso seems an option, then another somewhere between EP and SA??
Then SA to CC and or Houston seems pretty easy journeys.
So questions are
1. Any suggestions about places to stop (ie I have heard EP is a bit of a no go zone????) along the way. Sights must see?
2. Suggestions on nice sites in these places?
Any other must do/not do advice?
Many thanks all
Mark

  • We leave Tucson and spend the first night at the KOA in Van Horn or Ft. Stockton. Second night is in Kerrville at the Buckhorn Lake Resort. We have stayed at the KOA in South Padre and loved it. In Corpus Christi we stay at Gulf Waters RV Resort where all the spaces are individually owned and are exceptional.

I live in Houston and often have trouble showing guests around town. This isn't a touristy place unless you're into museums which are excellent, restaurants which are plentiful, or titty bars (we are famous for them, go figure) Most of Houston didn't exist before 1970, so there isn't much in the line of history. Not much in Galveston either aside from Moody Gardens and the Strand. Corpus is a tiny port town. It does have the Salena statue if you know who she was.

The hill country is beautiful. If you do anything, be sure to see the Texas Museum in Austin, along with the funky night life. San Antonio; The Alamo and the rest of the missions are cool. The riverwalk is good also. Fredericksburg is a charming touristy small town.

Pie Town New Mexico might be on your way ?

What the heck! I have been to the beer can house but I better get back downtown Houston. I think I missed a few "good" places. :)

1st night Hacienda RV Las Cruces 270 miles
2nd night Carlsbad NM for Carlsbad Caverns 204 miles
3rd and possibly 4th night Kerrville - Schreiner Park Kerrville TX long day 389 miles When we stayed there we stayed in deer field loop and had deer go right through our campsite
Then 70 miles to Travelers World in San Antonio

I second Hacienda RV park in Las Cruces. We stayed there in September and it was a beautiful park with good access to the interstate. While you're there, take short drive over to Mesilla and visit La Posta De Mesilla restaurant for some great Mexican style food. Just get there early because the wait can be quite lengthy.

If you don't head to Carlsbad, you can make your second stop at Fort Stockton RV park in Fort Stockton Texas. This is a very clean and well run park.
  • Haven't been to SA but have been to the Fredericsburg area. It's in the Texas Hill Country. It's much different than the flat areas of west/north Texas. Enchanted Rock is to the north of there. Luckenbach is about 8 miles from there. There are several campgrounds in the area. I didn't look far but this campground was $25.00 a night for fhu and cable. Nothing fancy but quiet, cheap, and next to the cop shop.

    Hill Country RV Park

I think people in Rv's were overnighing at the Walmart right down the street from this park also.

Several shops and restaurants on the main drag in FB and an interesting place that has tons of quirky metal work and gift objects. Fun just to walk around in there. It's near the west end of town. I called it the junk yard on my first trip past but loved the place afterward.

I'm in the Houston area but I think before I would come over here I would swing down 90 east of Elpaso and go through Marfa (Marfa Lights), then Alpine or Fort Davis and Fort Davis State Park, then through Marathon. Marthon RV park (let us dry camp for $15.00) on the main drag has a beautiful courtyard/fire pit area and very nice owners. Tell them the guy with the Generator in the metal box sent you.

I didn't have time to go further south of there but if you can check out the maps. The lady in Marathon said there is a petroglyph or cave site further down. Don't want to steer you wrong so check it out. You could go down that way and on over to the Texas gulf coast, Padre Island National seashore, corpus Christie and then up through Victoria and on up to the hill country.

You may want to also go to Austin before Houston. I haven't been there but hear it's nice. Restaurants, night life. I dont know about going downtown depending on your rv. Others may say more about that.

The small town of Junction on US10 has a nice free camp park on the bank of the Llamo River.

    Free is for me

I dont know about veering north toward Amarillo this time of year but Palo Duro Canyo is nice. I believe it's the second largest canyon feature in the USA. A bit out of the way but you could also hit the Big Texan for the 72 oz steak challenge.

So......if you were all the way up there and swung back west or however you end up there, visit the valley of Fires SP in Carazozo NM. Check the weather /snow conditions first.

If you want to hit the ski slopes check out Ruidozo NM.

  • Balmorhea State Park is 180 miles east of El Paso and 364 miles east of San Antonio on I10. A spring fed pool popular with scuba divers. Not far away is Fort Davis National Historic area a 19th century frontier fort and very interesting at the base of the Texas Rockies. Also the McDonald Observatory if you like the stars and cannot remember what our night sky looks like unimpeded by light. A beautiful mountain range hosting Fort Davis State Park, watch out for the javelinas!
