us 395

Need info about 395 from Burns Or. to Reno. Info like good road for trailers, all mountains, how long of a drive is it with a trailer, any camp grounds between the two? Looking on the map it looks like there are no big towns between the two and my driving for hours and hours are over, just can't do it any more so I don't want to get stuck on a bad road and no where to stay. thanks.

  • Eagle lake has a nice rv park and world class trout fishing. You would have to veer off 395 and take 139. It's not too far out of the way and a nice stop.
  • I took that route a few years ago (395) and it was a lovely drive. We stayed in a small but adequate RV park in Alturas and enjoyed walking around town and looking at the old buildings. There is also a State Park on the Calif border but we came to early in the year. Goose Lake I think its called. I dont recall mountains at all until after or south of Reno.
We've done the Winnemucca route too and there is again a small RV park right on the Oregon-Nev border. All I remember was it was gravel and the women smoked, a lot. But it was a place to stop if Winnemucca is to far to drive. I actually think the Winemucca route is a little shorter drive.
  • Oh, we love the 395 -- have driven it between OR border and Barstow many times with the rig.

I love this road. Not too steep anywhere. Plenty of places to pull off for a break/nap. Camping should be found in Winnemucca.
Don't know your driving habits/speeds, so would guesstimate about 7 hours pulling a trailer. Less than 6 hours in a car.
Remember this is open range country. Livestock has the right of way!

OP would have to take 95 I think to get to Winnemucca. That would be way out of his way. Much better to stay on 395 to Reno.
  • Been to Likely RV several times; great little place and the General Store in town is great as well - check out the goods in the basement.
  • Road is fine. Depending on your travel times, I would look at Goose Lake near Lakeview, OR, or Likely Golf and RV just east of Likely, CA

I would not take a nap at the rest area near Ravendale, Sloped and small turn out.
  • There is a rest area 4 hours from Burns on 395. 12 miles south of Ravendale. You can stay up to 8 hours to rest there. There is one campground 2.8 miles off 395 at Likely. Likely Place RV & Golf Course. OK reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com There is also an RV Park in Alturas. Sully's OK reviews also.
