US 50 through Western Colorado

Going to be traveling on US 50 next week from Grand Junction into Gunnison then on to Pueblo after that. I understand there are some steep ascents/descents. Would appreciate any advice. Driving a 41' diesel pusher towing a Honda CRV. Thanks

I'm sure you will get a ton of reply's but having driven that route a few times the only thing I remember is the beautiful Drive. With your set up you should have no issue, the passes are just normal and even when we were driving them in an older gaser they did not leave any impression other than the Beauty.

    Enjoy Colorado.

    BOL,
  • we've been over it two or three times, and you'll know you're climbing and descending, but I don't recall any problems. As stated, it's a beautiful byway.
  • We have done that drive with your exact rig includiing CRV. No problem. Enjoy. Betsy.
  • We were behind a truck that was having a hard pull up one of the passes. There was a HUGE line of traffic backed up behind him! Must've been five vehicles in all! That's what I like about Hwy 50. Drive it, you'll love it!
  • We are currently camped in western Colorado and will be headed east over Hwy 50 in a few weeks. Leaving Montrose you will pull Cirro Summit, then Blue Mesa and then the only real pass, Monarch. Monarch is my favorite east-west pass in Colorado, especially in the winter time. The years we lived in Ouray, I would drive to the front range, Denver or the Springs, to pick up inventory for our gift shop.

On top of Monrch Pass is a nice shop and worth a stop. Some of the best fudge made in the state, plus the gondola ride is very nice, great photo opportunities as well.
As mentioned above, with your rig, Hwy 50 is just not a problem.
  • Beautiful drive.

Good news is that there are no 2000 foot dropoffs with no guard rails or severe curves. You will have Monarch Pass with 6% grades for a while and some 30 to 45 mile curves. In fact, that is the only alert in Mountain Directory West from Grand Junction to Pueblo. With DP I cannot envision you having issue. But allow time as there can be some slow traffic; but there are also passing lanes.

We will be driving it again this Fall.

    Enjoy - be safe.
  • Will be on the same route (going opposite direction) next month so thanks everyone for the info.
  • Thinner Air up here, so less cooling; especially when stopped. Watch your Temp and/or Turbo Gauges, and you'll be fine. As reported above...
