Visa & Wal Mart

Wal Mart has filed a law suit against Visa over the new chipped cards which transfer most of the fraud cost back to the merchants. Visa doesn't require a pin on the new chip cards I have and if I lost one and someone used it at Wal Mart, Wal Mart would be the one to eat the cost of what was purchased. With the old non-chipped cards, the fraud charges got fed back to Visa as I understand the law suit. I have read that most countries other than the US and Canada, a pin number is required to use the chipped cards.

Well, if I was Walmart, and that was the deal, I'd not accept them either. How the heck would Walmart be able to know the card was stolen, or lost and found.

Our Visa chipped cards still require a PIN to use.

Today's Denver newspaper said that Walmart was going to first stop accepting the cards this month at their three stores in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Notice that they didn't stop first in Toronto or Vancouver. So, it sounds to me like they are sending Visa a message and may not expand the threat unless Visa refuses to back down.

We got our chip card three years ago to use at pay-at-the-pump gas stations in Canada, which always required a PIN. And, when Walmart started accepting chip cards in the U.S., they also required a PIN. But sometime in the past two years, Wlamart stopped requiring PINs and started requiring signatures. Don't know why they did that as I always preferred the PIN because no one can copy it off the back of the card like they can a signature.

I don't know where you read that, the only time a pin is not required on a chipped card in Canada is when it is under the spending threshold that allows you to use the touch-less swipe method.

Actually that's not true. I have swiped my chipped cc a couple of times on a remote terminal when there was a transmission error. The terminal does ask you, however, to approve the fact that you are swiping.

don't know about all of this but the process is the chip in usa credit cards and NEXT year all will require a pin and not a signature.

security is obvious.

Just about every store in the Montreal area (at least all the ones we shop at) use chip cards and require a PIN number or they cannot process the transaction. The only exceptions are the flash chip cards.
