Nope, not always in this neck of the woods. Some are barely big enough to accommodate pick up trucks. It's just not something I would count on up here. I also think it's a bad idea to put a large rig at a fire station, potentially blocking emergency equipment's path. - pitchExplorer IIIn the east you never have to drive more than 20 miles or so between towns. Bathroom breaks and lunchs are very easily accommodated in a church, fire, station or shopping plaza parking lot.
- jnharleyExplorerOur issue with US routes and state roads is the lack of places to pull off even for a bathroom break. We have a terrible time finding a place large enough to pull off. Shoulders are narrow and there usually are no truck stops or rest areas. We do drive on "red" routes when it is the most expedient way to go but we usually stick to interstates so we can at least take a bathroom break Maybe it is better in some parts of the country but not in the East.
- dcasonExplorerAllstays Camp & RV ap
We use this ap all the time...it will show steep grades that you might want to avoid depending on what you are driving.
You can filter in low bridges or overpasses and lots of other things.
I love it for our reconditioned Ipad:B - rfryerExplorerYou don’t always know and that makes the trip more interesting. I deliberately drive the scenic roads and black, squiggly lines on the map, but I pull a small TT, too. A big rig might want to avoid them, or at least do some research first. But the interstates allow you to drive from coast to coast and never see anything. If you want to really see the country and get a feel for the people just pick a highway and go.
- CroweExplorerTrucker's Road Atlas. Not sure if there's an electronic app but if you have a SmartPhone you might want to look into it. It's obvious some of you haven't traveled in the northeast area of the country. Low bridges (unannounced) are much more common up here.
- dbblsExplorerI very rarely travel interstates and have never had a problem. The only roads I might be concerned with would be ones designated with a letter instead of a number.
- sdianel_-acct_cExplorerStick to US highways rather than interstates and you should be OK. Most state highways are OK, but if you want to try a state highway, check their website for low clearances. We explore other roads in our toad.
- amandasgrammaExplorerI, too, disagree with comment about anywhere in the USA. There are just some conditions we don't want to stress ourselves with.
We bought DeLorme's Topographical software. You can put in the route you're thinking of and then see what elevations on the route are and what the rate of the climb would be (6%, 1% or undo-able). You can also tell if the route has switchbacks (didn't like those with a 36 ft motorhome and towing a Dodge Dakota PU. Good luck - T-10_ParabolicExplorerGet a truckers road atlas, it has all low overpasses listed...T-10
