I'll be at Grizzly RV Park the first two weeks in June. I need to go to Red Lodge to do some research in Genealogy ( the purpose of my trip). What route do you suggest for this? I would also like to visit Cody if that figures in. Just taking the truck for these trips and probably staying overnight in Red Lodge. Thanks,

if you're just taking the truck, you can do Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, but it will take some time..that's a beautiful drive, but lots of curves and then a series of switchbacks down the side of a very high mountain. But you can come back through Cody and go back into Yellowstone from there.You will need the two days, maybe more if your genealogy research takes more time that you expect. If you want to read a really good history of Sheridan WY over to Red Lodge..all that high plains country up to Miles City, etc. it's called Where the Rivers Run North, by Sam Morton. Lots of names mentioned in it.

Since you're not towing, I'd take 212 out the NE gate in Yellowstone. It'll give you a chance to experience the Beartooth Pass. On some of those turns, you should be able to look through the windshield and see your own tail lights. :)

Yikes! Now you are scaring me :) I read somewhere that Beartooth is not open til June 14th tis year. I sure hope that is not true. Ill be there on June 3rd for 10 days. Texas Shadow thanks for the tip on the book. Ill get it. Lots of family from there.

If the East Entrance is open, you could go through the park to Cody. From Cody, take WY-120/MT-72 to MT-308 to Red Lodge. You could overnight in either Red Lodge or Cody. If you have not seen it, the Buffalo Bill Museum Complex in Cody is worth a visit. If you stayed in Cody and the Chief Joseph Highway(WY-296) is open, you could take that to US-212, Cook City and the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone and return to West Yellowstone on the Northern part of the Grand Loop.

Thanks, TT. I will look those up on the map. I don't have to go to Cody, it just seems like the museum is worth the trip. I mostly must go through the museum in Red Lodge because my ancestors will have some things in there. Which of those two ways would be the easiest to drive or are they all the same? I know the Beartooth is not for the faint of heart but I do think that will be closed.

Just an update, the roads were perfect with only some snow but all on the sides. I came back from Red Lodge via Billings because Cabelas had to be conquered (yeah! what a fun place). For those going that way or anyone dropping down into west yellowstone from the north, there is road construction with 15 minute delays. Not a big deal and you can stretch your legs.

PS wifi at grizzly is great in premium site. All bars all the time.

You had better re-read the reviews for Grizzly. It is a fantastic park, but the wifi sucks. No way you will be able to depend on it if your class is interactive and live. This is not a condemnation of Grizzly, it is a condemnation of the combination of Tengointernet and the very real fact that the entire Yellowstone Park area has very limited wifi bandwidth being shared by thousands upon thousands of individuals.

I think we should have those stickers on our cars that say RV net. Do they have them anymore? I'd put one on my Trailer if they did.

Don't know what site I am getting, just one that is long and has wifi because I am teaching a summer session class online.

The roads from Billings to Red Lodge and on to Cody were all good when I drove them a few years ago. Nothing challenging that I remember. The Chief Joseph is more challenging than US-14/20 to the East entrance, but very scenic and not like the Beartooth (which I think is a great scenic route just not for a large RV).

To be sure. I do want to go up to shop at Cabelas in Billings. What would you all think of going north on the freeway to Billings and dropping down to Red Lodge. Then down to Cody and back to West Yellowstone? Would that be a reasonable route?
I'd be staying overnight at Red Lodge.
