Acadia NP

We're considering a trip to Acadia NP just after Labor Day and are looking for advice in choosing a campground and hopefully a site
within that campground. We're hoping for a site overlooking the ocean and don't necessarily need hookups. We like to hike and flyfish,, if possible. Any help from folks who've been there would really help us out.
Thanks,
Kopak
  • Crowe, thank you will look into campgrounds other than the NP
  • None of the campsites at Blackwoods or Sewall (NP CG's in Acadia NP) are on/near the water - they are a short walk - but the park loop road lays between both those CG's and the shorefront. There is a new CG opening up late this summer at the northern section - Schoodic Point - but I do not know the layout there... Reservations should be made, but they are not site-specific, other than the type of site (tent/RV/HC). We spend a lot of time at Acadia - after Labor Day is a great time to visit. The park map on the Acadia website shows the various bridge heights/clearances. Minimal issue getting to the CG's - driving the loop road is where you may have height issues. ST

I could, indeed, be confused. I haven't camped in the park since my tenting days a bazillion years ago and hubby does all the driving when we visit. I'll second on Schoodic Point. Incredibly beautiful, although separated from the main part of the park.
  • While on Frenchman's Bay rather than the ocean, across from Acadia NP, Lamoine State Park provides inexpensive dry camping (bathrooms with showers). A short drive to Acadia, and much quieter. Some sites overlook the bay.
  • Thanks to all of you for your responses. After considering everything, we've decided to camp at Seawall cg for tis trip. I was able to reserve a specific site for our stay starting just after Labor Day through receation.gov, which we have done at other NP cgs in the past. We've also used reserveamerica.gov to do similar reservations at various cgs. Once again, thanks for the help. If anyone needs my help with anything on this, let me know.

  • I would also highly recommend heading further north someday when you have the time, to Cobscook Bay state park. You can reserve sites there and be on the waterfront. It is a bay so the tide empties it and fills it each day. Large, private sites, no hookups. I've sent a picture to your private email of the site I had last September.
  • I work in Bar Harbor (right on Main Street) and there are several in town locations to park an RV (The one I see is along Main Street right after Park Street). Not really sites so much as permitted RV parking. Labor Day is a busy weekend so get the reservation soon wherever you stay. (My husband and I do AirBnB and charge $70/night and Labor Day weekend was booked in November by our guests.) Re: water view, you will see water views if you go hiking, boating, etc. so camp site views probably less required than the average spot IMHO. :)
