Any new rules for Federal forest boon docking?

It has been two years since I checked out my old campsite in Wyoming in the US Forest area near Encampment. I have heard there are new rules about camping with my 5th wheel in the forest but no details as to what restrictions there are. I know the conifer blight has hit the trees bad up there and those that have ATV's have caused some erosion damage. So my question is are there new restrictions to camping 1/4 mile off the beaten path? I have enjoyed many years in the US Forest camping far from the campsites set up where you pay. I plan to do so again this year and really have found nothing new that stops me from doing so. I would like to hear from any that have found new restrictions any boon docking on federal ground not just for Wyoming but other places too.

  • wintersun, please forgive my ignorance -- why would a trailer create more washboards than any other vehicle? And does going really slowly reduce the washboarding? (If so, I am not guilty -- I tow my trailer at less than 5 mph on rough dirt roads!)

Thanks in advance for the info!
  • I was amazed at the poor road quality I found in Nevada and Utah last year until I saw all the people pulling trailers with their pickup trucks up and down these roads. They created washboards with 3-4 inch ridges and the erosion resulting from these torn up roads made it tough to stay on the road in places - thank god for my truck's exhaust brake on the downgrades.
  • You will likely find little difference from the last time you were camping in Wyoming, but start at this page Wyoming MVUMs and pick the ranger district that applies, look very closely at the MVUMs (motor vehicle use maps) as they are what counts when it comes to the rules on the ground. The MVUMs have the roads and rules listed as to where you can go, and how far off the road you can be... legally.

I have found plenty of discrepancies where the MVUM says one thing, but the ranger station says something else. Especially when it comes to the distance off the road you are allowed to camp. Some forests say one vehicle length. I have a problem with that as a guy like you could be a lot further off the road than a guy in a VW bug that's tent camping. The rules are in place as a common sense backup and I doubt a ranger would bother you if you are in a previously used campsite.

You will have to talk to the local ranger station to get their take on enforcement of the rule stated on the MVUM.
