April Trip Along the California Coast?

Hello, friends,

I hope you will pardon this not-quite-strictly-RV-related request!

Although I live towards the east coast, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to visit the Big Sur area of California as a wildland firefighter early in my career (and that’s been YEARS ago!). I thought it was a beautiful area, although of course much different than my Blue Ridge mountain homeland. Additionally, I have always wanted to see the “big trees” along the Northern California coast, specifically Redwood National Park and some of the similar parks in that general area.

Years later now, I find myself with some time off coming up in mid-April, and my wife and I are toying with the idea of flying into Monterey, renting a car and driving up the coast along Highway 1, visiting some of the redwood parks, and then flying back home out of Crescent City. These destinations are very tentative, but will combine both areas that I’d like to see. We have a week or so to make the trip, but this will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us and so we’d like to take in as much as we can. We like scenery, history, and natural beauty, but that’s not to say we wouldn’t like to see the Golden Gate bridge, Bixby bridge, or any other sites that are tourist attractions (but not tourist traps!).

I know a lot of folks on this board are either from this general area or visit often, so would you mind giving me some advice, please? What kind of weather can we expect in mid-April; is this a decent time of year to visit if we don’t plan to get in the ocean? I would expect there would be at least some flowers blooming and trees leafed out by then, given that the coastline would moderate the weather? What points of interest would you recommend as “must see” places, keeping in mind our interests listed above? We have not yet decided whether we will be camping or staying in motels or lodges, but what are your favorite places to stay (campgrounds, cabins, motels)? We are considering staying mostly in state park cabins or something similar, if these are to be found along our route. Neither of us care for the bed-and-breakfast environment. Any particular airport or car rental company you might recommend?

We haven’t had time to do any extensive planning or research yet, as this opportunity just now fell into place, but I’m hoping some of you would be kind enough to get me started with ideas and suggestions!

Many thanks,
Regan

  • Having just done a trip to the Redwoods in the first week May, with a RV, I can only echo what the bear ll and others have said. Although we had great weather you just never know.

You should also drive The Avenue Of The Giants, it is amazing and there are a few places to stay at the small towns on the 32 mile trek. It is an easy drive with many places to explore.

The Avenue Of The Giants website HERE tells all about it, you can order a "free" $1.99 shipping, Travel Guide and Map from them, It is worth it. You can now download it but the print is really small.

As for places to stay on the Highway there are just a few, in Redcrest there is the Redcrest Resort that have rustic cabins. others are in the Tour Guide.

As for the rental cars. The only ones that I saw when I flew in and out of Crescent City were Hertz and a local rental car company.

There is also an airport in Eureka but its flights seem to change, you might check there also. I have family there and sometimes I can get flights there and sometimes it is Crescent City.

Good luck and have fun. Anything else just ask..
  • As stated by "the bear II" April is the turning of the seasons on the coast, as the valley warms up it pulls cool air off the ocean (fog), So it can be iffy, But still beautiful.
I would suggest renting a motor home and camping/rving up the coast.. There are some very nice campgrounds right on the coast with beautiful views.
Take HWY 1 as far north as you want and come back HWY 101 or 5.

There is a lot of California history along the coast, a lot of logging and mining history further north. Also, dont know how far you plan to travel, but Oregon has some wonderful coastal camp grounds!!
Try "google Earth" then study the towns and cities along your route, there is a ton of information on internet.

Hotels/motels/cabins plus rental car will be just as expensive as a motor home..

Spend some time on the internet,, I would give you my take on towns I have seen and visited, but then again my likes and interest are different than yours..

One other suggestion,, Google "Huell Howser's welcome to California's gold!!

He spent countless time on the coast documenting it's history and heritage!!

We spent one summer on a Huell Road Trip" Had a ton of fun and learned allot about CA..
    good luck, enjoy!!
  • The weather in April is variable and can be either summer-like or winter-like, so you won't really know until the last minute unfortunately. I can tell you that the storms that do come through that time of year usually only last 1 day, vs. the Dec-Feb multi-day "firehose" events. I think it's worth doing. We usually start camping the first weekend of May. Our first trip will be to Wrights Beach just north of Bodega Bay.

The trees are mostly pine trees, so leaves aren't really an issue. There will be some Poppies and other flowers out, but a little later is better farther north.

The section of highway 1 between Bodega Bay and Mendocino is our favorite. We really like Gualala and Mendocino. Further north, Patrick's Point is spectacular. For redwoods, Humbolt Redwoods state park, Albee Creek CG. If you are starting in Monterey, you might want to take the short trip south to Big Sur. We like Kirk Creek but you need to reserve 6-months in advance (same for Wrights Beach) for the best spots. SF will be fun for a day or two. If you like baseball, try a Giant's game, but wear a jacket.

The things to see in Northern California are endless. I have lived here for over 20 years and feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Have fun!
  • Weather in April can be dicey...usually fog and overcast mornings with some clearing in the afternoon. Possible drizzle or light rain or even heavy rain with wind. Or you could have sunshine all day with temps in the 60 - 70 range by afternoon.

Be sure to take the skunk train from FT Bragg to Willits and back...it's a beautiful trip. Also hit all of the tourist traps along the way...corny but fun.

For overnight stays I would look at www.rvparksreviews.com to find campgrounds with cabins and find a website with Bed & Breakfast lists.

Half Moon Bay quaint seaside villeage with art & antique shops
Bodega Bay same as above plus where the movie "The Birds" was filmed
Some great family style restaurants in Occidental (a little inland)
As a kid I remember Patricks Point state park as being really special. The trail down to agate beach and then looking through all the tiny rocks on the beach for various gemstones.
Jedediah Smith State Park with trails through beautiful redwood groves
