- LantleyNomadTraffic is not an issue. There is public transportation available at Cherry Hill.
- John_BurkeExplorerI Lived in Arlington 2013 and part of 2014. Best suggestion, fly in, get a hotel and take the trains, busses and taxi's. If you want to camp you stay so far away that the traffic makes it unbearable. If you are coming to see the city stay in Arlington or somewhere else close. If you are coming to camp be prepared for TRAFFIC. If you are military or retired military Ft Belvoir has a nice campground.
- MerrykaliaExplorerAs several have said, there are other "campier" RV parks, but Liberty Harbor is close, it's unusually quiet to be in the city and it is so close to everything you want to do. The commute into the city is less than 15 minutes unless you try to go in/out at 7:30-9:00 am or 4:00-5:30.
It is expensive, but with the cost of the commute from other places, it can make up for it quickly. The PATH train into the city is $2.50 per person. The water taxi is about $10.00 per person, so it was worth it for us to walk the 3 blocks to the PATH.
We have 2 DDs who are 10 and 7. We walked back from the PATH train several evenings/nights after 10pm and never felt uncomfortable.
When we were there, we had a 2 year old 35' TT that was really nice. We went to bed the first night with sites on either side of us open. We heard one pull in about 11:00, but didn't really pay any attention to it. The next morning, we went out and we were between two Prevost motorcoaches. WE WERE THE TRAILER TRASH in the neighborhood. That being said, they were both very friendly and we had several interesting conversations with them about our travels. - VegasBTExplorerThanks for the tips!
- vermilyeExplorerAnother possibility for NYC is Croton Point Park in Croton on Hudson. A bit of a walk to the train station, then a 45 minute ride to Grand Central Station.
- NCWriterExplorerStayed at both Liberty Harbor ad Cherry Hill in July. Both worked out very well.
The convenience of Liberty Harbor is worth the extra cost. Ignore some old photos lingering on Trip Advisor that show a scary-looking building next to the RV park. It's all finished as an upscale office building and, in fact, the neighborhood is quite gentrified for walking to the Path train. The ferry back from Wall Street (weekday only) is a very lovely cruise around the tip of Manhattan past the Statue of Liberty.
Cherry Hill is a full service RV park and close in, safe suburban area for DC. Their little restaurant by the pool area is great! Just what we needed after busy days. The laundry is huge. They do a full briefing for visitors on everything first timers might need to know about public transportation and sites to visit. - tjfogelbergExplorerFor NYC, I recommend Battlerow in Nassau County on L.I. It is much less expensive than Liberty and a beautiful little park with a suburban feel. However, my recommendation assumes you don't mind a commute on the LIRR into Penn Station. Near Jones beach and some nice small towns with plenty of dining and shopping. Battlerow is a county park with W&E at the site and a dump station. It is just south of the LI Expressway (495) eliminating the problem of height restrictions that apply on many parkways throughout the LI Area.
- BumpyroadExplorerthere is a small campground on the Chesapeake bay just North of Baltimore off I-95.
bumpy - D___MExplorerAs mentioned, the spots at Liberty Harbor RV Park are nothing more than an area the property owner fenced off from a huge communter parking spot in Jersey City, NJ and put in water and 30 amp electric. No sewer site, but there is a dump station. And there is a bath house that is shared with the marina folks. (My rigs in the background)
It's all about location. There is a water taxi that picks up commuters heading for Wall street. Nothing like coming back from shelping around NYC and being 100 yards from your RV. There is a PATH train (subway) station about 5 blocks away that takes you to the World Trade Center, or to 34th street where you pick up the NYC subway. There are some nice restaurants in Jersey City. Staying at the outlying CGs will eat up an hour or two of visiting time each way.
For your first trip to DC, your best bet is Cherry Hill Park in College Park.,MD. It is very popular with the pilgrims. It is located near the WMATA Metro (subway) system. A city bus that can take you to the Metro station has a stop right at the front gate, or you can drive and park in the surface lots or parking garages. t There are several restaurants in the area. There is a grocery store right up the street. The staff is very knowledgeable about DC and where to go and how to get there. It has a well stocked store.
Here is a list of other CGs in the area. (clicky) - shawdowbossExplorerFor d.c. i would use Cherry Hill in college park,md. Easy access to the metro. The bus line goes into the park, you take to the college station metro stop. You can even get to the greenbelt metro station pretty easy.
