Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim campground

Planning a 4 week trip through the southwest this summer and one of our stops will be the Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim campground. I have reserved a site in loop B with electric hook ups. Was reading some of the reviews on rvparkreviews.com and a couple people mentioned that the campground is not recommended for rvs 35 feet or more in length. Our fifth wheel is a 35 model number and probably right at 38 ft long. Are we going to have a problem with this campground? Should I look else where for a campground?

  • While you are there, take your toad on East Portal Road and go down to the diversion dam and picnic area. Have lunch.
  • While in the area you should REALLY consider taking the TOAD to Ouray & Silverton. Maybe even rent a Jeep and do some of the easier trails like Ophir and the trail that parallels Rt.550 that takes you to the old mines you see from 550. Careful tho, DO NOT accidentally get on the Black Bear 4x4 trail from Rt.550 over to Teluride. Even experienced off-roaders have died on that trail. You can also ride with a 'professional' tour guide driver.
  • Not only gas (or diesel) at City Market, but go in and get a Customer Loyalty card and save three more cents a gallon.

The card is also good at Smith's and Kroger and a couple of others.
  • Its a beautiful wooded CG. There are at least a dozen sites that will fit U. Some are pull thru. Centrally located water. We love it. Modern, clean Pit toilets. At the turnoff from Rt 50, there is a famopus little 'Nic-Nak' shop. Everyone stops in to buy souvenirs. Their parking lot is large nough 4 you. Its also a good place to unleash the TOAD. Its a short but steep climb up to the park entrance. The town of Montrose is a very nice modern town. Gas is cheapest at City Market. Let us know where you'll be going before & after the park. Can give lots of info of the area.
  • Thanks, appreciate all the info. Sounds like we should be ok.
  • Some sites are long enough for you. When you reserve the sites online, it gives you the dimensions. I'd stay away from the sites that are along side the road; the back-ins are much nicer and more private.
  • Not our favorite CG but as is typical with NPS CG's they have some sites you can fit into.
  • There are a few sites capable of handling longer rigs. I've seen 40' DP's with a toad in a couple of the longer pull throughs. If you have a site reserved that shows adequate length, you should be OK getting in and out of the CG on the roads.
