Bull Trout Lake Idaho

It's been a long time since we've been up to this area camping having instead chosen to boondocks, but we are having a group come with us over the 4th and having a public bathroom would help with the holding tanks and water. Bull Trout has two sections, Bull Trout Lake and Martin lake. I'm looking at site 31 and thinking that since it's a double site and 65' long that we'll not only have plenty of backing room but room for our slide outs. Anyone out there been up to this area in the last year camping that maybe has pictures or information?

Thank you!
  • No. The late night partiers were in the group sites two rows over. This section is close to Martin Lake. Camp on that side and you could leave your canoe at the lake and within your sight. If you want to canoe in Bull Trout, you would want to stay in the Bull Trout section. Those are right on the lake and you could leave your canoe at water's edge. Here's a link to the reservations page with a map of each section - campsites map and here's a link to Google Maps of the road going, various lakes, and boondocking sites - Google maps. If you zoom in on this map, you will see the various RV's along the road going in. Our rig is too big to maneuver there but you could.
  • Nice!! Thank you. I hope this wasn't the place the tenters kept you awake until 4 AM!!!!

So, how far would I have to carry my canoe to the lake?
  • Promised DJ a trip report so here it is -

We camped in the Martin Lake section in site 31. Sites 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32 are on the last part of the loop and on a more sparsely populated or widely spaced section.

One of the things we noticed is the absence of mosquitos. Bull Trout is known for mosquitos and we've always been prepared with spray and Off! candles, but there were none. It was amazing. There were a few horseflies and every evening around 7pm the gnats came out and were pesty, but no mosquitos. Not sure if they sprayed for them or not.

View of that loop with our TV on the left. Our site, site 31, is the last one on the left. As you can see, there is more room for more sites, but they'e chosen not to put more in, which is ok with us.

Site 31, head on - 65' deep but I'm pretty sure it was more. We were backed all the way back. It's pretty unlevel front to back but with leveling blocks we made it work.

Site 31 from the side - plenty of room for all of our slide-outs.

View from the back. Notice the height of the leveling blocks in the rear. If we had more persons join us, we could've gone back further to give them room in the site to park.

    View of site -

My family playing a beanbag toss game, but look at the space behind with no close neighbors!

Bull Trout - my youngest granddaughter looking to her Grandpa (with the shirt). Notice the boaters fishing.

Both granddaughters and dogs enjoying the lake -

Heading back after playing in the lake. This is right by the host campsite at the junction of the Martin Lake section and the Bull Trout lake section -

A lot of tent campers in the Martin Lake Section by the lake -

  • AH..OK, that explains it. I know it is a popular place and I was surprised it only had pitiful few and small sites. Of course I was right on the lake unaware of the Martin sites.

I will have my canoe rack done in a couple weeks and am planning on going back. Great place to be when it get so hot down here!!!

Bring back lots of pics to post when you get back!!!
  • DJ - The Bull Trout CG area has three sections - One right on Bull Trout Lake and you are right - these are tight spots. I've seen Class A's backed into some of them but we would not do it. Then there's the Martin Lake section - two loops and one is a group area. The Martin Lake Loop has plenty of wide long spots with plenty of backing room. We went ahead and reserved 31 because it's a double site, 65' long, fits up to 16 persons and 4 vehicles. The side that it's on has a wide entry road as opposed to 19 that is narrower with more trees. The site we always stayed at was 27 that was pretty much a straight back in from the road.

    Thanks for the comments though.
  • Well, I THOUGHT I was at Bull Trout Lake. Went in there with my TC and an inflatable. All sites were full and I was glad I didn't have a trailer of any kind to turn around!!!

It was after dark when I got in there so maybe I missed something. This was about 5 years ago.
