California- San Diego and up. cheap/boondocking places

I can't speak for the rest of the State, but the 101/1 area north of Ukiah has no free camping that I could find on trips the last two years.

Even sleeping overnight in rest areas is prohibited!

There are some (relatively cheap) oceanside roughcamping areas on Hwy 1 north of Fort Bragg. Decent access, no amenities, first come first served, and as I recall about $25.00 a night.
