Why not take Hwy 395 on the eastern Sierras up to Hwy 50 and down to Sacramento and over to CA 101 and begin traveling north from there. You'll avoid all the southern oceanside traffic. Hwy 395 is beautiful and not many people. It also has many national forest campgrounds to stay. Do you have your Senior Pass? 1/2 price. The temps are cooler at this time of year compared to southern Calif deserts. Once you get on 101 north of San Francisco you'll have the forest campgrounds and wonderful views of redwoods and ocean. Continue up into Oregon on 101 for the grand finale!!
