Campgrounds in the Long Beach, CA area

Hello Everyone,

We are looking to spend some time (a week or 2) in the Long Beach, CA area to visit family. We don't want to take our 45' motor home into Los Angeles but would like to stay somewhere that is a comfortable drive in our toad to the Long Beach area.

We would like full hook-ups but don't require other amenities since our coach is self-sufficient. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,
Leslie & Stuart

  • Thank you all for your advice. We managed to get a reservation in Golden Shore for 2 weeks in mid-October. Since our family lives right on the shore near the Queen Mary this will be perfect. We really appreciate all the input.

  • Golden Shore is kinda expensive, as it is the only full hookup campground within Long Beach that is not also part of a Mobil Home park.

Be sure to google map the locations, and then look at them with Satellite view. Do you really want to stay there? Golden Shore is great, and has a LONG waiting list. I think it is also around $50 - %60 a night?

You might want to look around Disneyland, and the parks near there in Anaheim. You can take the car to Long Beach, it is straight down Katella to Willow Ave, and on to whatever destination you have in Long Beach. I used to work for CLB and lived near Magnolia and the Garden Grove Freeway.

There are a couple of small RV parks, but also they are part of a mobile home park, so I would not highly recommend them to a stranger. .

The nice RV park near Knotts Berry Farm, where I stayed when having my termites taken care of, is no longer there, turned into another shopping center. .. Like we really needed one of those?

Good luck, and have fun on your trip!

Rush hour starts around 4 am on the 91 freeway - mostly going westbound. Eastbound is fine until around noon, when it starts to pick up traffic. It gets really heavy eastbound around 2 pm until 7 or 8pm. No kidding! Westbound is find after about 5 pm. More live out of town, and commute into Orange and LA counties.

Long Beach does have some gang problems. Stick to the major streets, and avoid the west side north of 7th st after dark, you should be fine. It is also home to many hundreds of million dollar homes, then 5 miles away are slums. Go figure??

  • KOA in Pomona is worth a look. Sites are tight but that is to be expected in L.A.

I think people might be over selling how long it will take to get around. According to google maps it is only 30 mins from LB to Disneyland, without traffic, so that is an option. But, I also agree that Golden Shores is perfect. If you ride bikes, there is a nice bike path that goes right by the park.

Use the google maps traffic info to see what traffic is like in real time, but also historically, based on time, to help you decide the best routes around with the best times.

Yes very nice area along the coast. I walk, DW uses scooter and just beautiful along the coast. This is one of our favorite RV parks. Also nice restaurants close by near the RV park. Just don't venture away from the local coastal area. Several blocks north crime is a problem but not in the coastal area.

  • Golden shores is really nice small RV park. we stay there and love it. Very good security and gate. Long Beach police Dept patrols through the RV park. I lived near that area for over 40 years when working in law enforcement before moving to WY. When ever we have to visit the south bay area we stay at Golden Shores.
  • If you are visiting family in Long Beach you have lots of choices but most will require a drive that can be 45 minutes without traffic to 1 1/2 hours with traffic.

Golden Shore would be the closest and shortest drive time.

Several parks near Disneyland would mean at least a 45 minute drive if no traffic.

I would check rvparkreviews.com for other big rig friendly parks near Long Beach.
  • There is a RV park in Downtown Long Beach it is
    Golden Shore
    MAP

Or if you want to be close to LAX and the LA area, there is
    Dockweiler

Both on the water, and having full hookups, giving access to all of the area. Both nice places but as far as a comfortable drive around here that is debatable :B
  • There are no "comfortable drives" from outside of LA to Long Beach. It's going to be at least 1 1/2 hours to LB from any direction. I would suggest that you park your rig at Golden Shore RV Park in Long Beach and enjoy the stay.
