camping at Cades Cove in November

We are going to Cades Cove on November the 6th to stay for a couple of nights. It looks like that time of year is walk up only, no reservations. Anyone been there during that time of the year? I was wondering how full it will be and if we'll have trouble getting a site. We will be taking a truck camper so we don't need a big site this time. Also, what will the weather be like? thanks
  • There will be no crowds, you should be able to pick what you want if they are still open.

The weather will be cold, rainy with the possibility of snow. There will also be some spectacular blue bird days.
  • The leaf lookers will all be gone as will the leaves on the trees. Expect cool days and cold nights, probably below freezing, possibly rain and even a dusting of snow.

You would be very wise call the park to be very certain they have plans to have any campgrounds open that time of year.
  • I doubt very much if it will be close to full; probably the opposite, but to be safe, I would arrive before late PM. The weather could still be OK or pretty cold at that date. Remember, there is a little altitude there so as to slightly effect temp.

If it snows they may close the road on you... Happened to us one trip... we had plenty of time so hunkering down was not a problem. we got delayed two days haha... Rangers came around checking on everyone... We was tent camping then several years back...

  • We did years ago. We are from Michigan so we did not think it was too cold.
We have also been there in early March.
When we camp in what we expect to be cold weather we always take an electric blanket and extra blankets along. Plus of course cold weather clothes and lots of mittens and gloves. Do not always need them but we are prepared.
Just remembered, a shovel and extra thing to do in case we are snowed in.

I think Cades Cove and Smokemount are the only two camp sites that are open the year around in the Natl Park. Neither camp ground has electric except maybe a couple of sites with 15AMP service for medical situation folks.

It can get pretty nasty there when it snows... Sure is a beautiful camp spot however with the adjoining CADES COVE motor/hiking trail... We really like the ELKMONT camp ground better but it is closed during the winter months.

It probably would be a good idea to checkin with the rangers before heading out - This area got hit pretty hard this year with flooding and lots of rain... Probably the best way in would be from the Townsend side during the winter months.

NOTE: I just noticed you have a 32-foot trailer... Although the roads in is ok for the big trailers you must be careful going around the many curves on the natl Park roads that have low overhang. Sometimes swinging wide to clear these curves gets exciting with on-coming traffic on the two lane roads. Just be watchful in these areas.

  • We are planning on going next month. One our favorite places but we will probably stay out at Towndsend.
