Changing home residence question

We snow bird to Florida every winter and now live there just as much as we do in NC and are thinking of changing our home residence to there.
We already have a mail address there.
Can anyone who has done this tell me the various changes that have to made and the order to make them?
Also, are there any pitfalls that we should know about?

  • We have been looking into this as well. The kids and grandkids are in NC but FL has much better tax consequences.
I have a buddy that sold his MD house to his daughter for a dollar to make sure he didn't have any problems but that was a little extreme I thought. It opens him up to some chucklehead running off with his daughter and selling the house.
FL requires that you are there 6 months to maintain domicile, but that's tough to prove. It doesn't mean you can't go to OBX for vacation for example.
No state income tax is a big number to not have to pay, and I want to live in FL anyway but with those grandkids in NC I'm not going to win that one :).
PawPaw is right, talk to a NC lawyer about that end. Looking at the map you have the perfect combo, cool summers in the hills of NC and warm winters in FL. We used to live in Wilkesboro, the summer Floridians helped the economy a lot.
Good luck with all of it.
  • Neither one of you above has done it, so why did you bother answering.

I am looking for some one who has done it.

I know everything that has to be changed, but I am interested in what order it has to be done.

If I don't get any answers here, I'll just stop in at the local government center when we get to Florida in October.

  • Do a google search on the difference in "Residence" and "Domicile". Everyone has both, for most people they are the same. For RV's they are often different.

To understand the difference think about a child going to college or a person in the army.
  • If you intend to keep your home/ property in North Carolina - I would recommend talking to a local lawyer.

Be aware that your diver's license address, your car / truck tags and your insurance for your car/ truck all need to be for the same address. Getting caught with a driver's license issued in one state and car tags in another or insurance in another - invites the state tax folks to take a long hard look at all your finances.

Many states take exception to residents seeking to move their domicile/ residence to another state - yet still maintain a residence in their state. There are very state specific requirements to being able to get off the NC income tax rolls and how you pay your property taxes in NC.

Florida doesn't really have any issues with folks trying to change their residence to Florida.
  • state taxes,
    drivers licenses
    plates for car/trucks.
insurance for car/truck , different states, different prices.
    sales taxes.

I know from Ohio to South Carolina.. SC has sales tax on Food, Ohio does not.

hopefully others with better idea/knowledge will follow up.
