full time changing residence

hi everyone, not new to the forum, just returning after a 5 years absence, have a question about full timing and changing state of residence.
We currently live in michigan, going to be retiring in about 3-5 yrs and we are planning on selling the house and hitting the road full time, we wanna change our state of residency since michigan now taxes govt. pensions, and the vehicle insurance is outrageous since we are a "no fault" state.
when would be a good time to make that change and how do we go about doing it????? i know there are full time rv sites that can do address changes, which state is the best with no state income tax and lower vehicle insurance??? can we change our address a year or so before we retire and get new drivers licences and transfer insurance or should we wait???
just want some info to plan for the future.

thanks
  • FL has no state tax and tags are relatively low, however vehicle insurance is more expensive in FL. It is also no fault state. My RV Mail in Crestview FL can set up address and they have mail forwarding.
TX has Escapees and lots of people use that state as home base. Don't remember how much our insurance was when we lived in TX.
Tennessee is another state to consider.
  • We are MI residents that are full-time and we were going to change residency to S Dakota. We have not been near there yet, but have been near FL 3 or 4 times so decided to change to FL. What I found out is that there is a first time registration fee for every vehicle which for us was around $1,000, then the licenses and tax. When I check on insurance I was amazed to find that quotes from 4 different companies in supposedly the cheapest county in FL are way more than I pay in MI and with much less coverage. The best for us was to stay MI residents until we get to S Dakota, so that's what we are doing for now.
  • Florida, Texas, and S.D. are considered RV friendly for various and sundry reasons. However, you should review all your financial and health needs before deciding. I'm not an attorney, nor am I familiar with Mich. law. However, as long as you are full-time employed in the state, I would assume you are considered a resident.

If establishing residency in one of the friendly states, I'd probably establish my mail forwarding address about a month before heading out to full time. If you choose Fl for domicile, see St. Brendan's Isle. They are an excellent mail forwarding service and can guide you thru the process of establishing domicile. In Florida, you'll need to appear for your DL, register vehicles, and pay your fees. There are no vehicle inspections to deal with. Then you'll need to set up banking, insrance, register with the Court of Records for Intent to Domicile ($10) and register to vote. Good luck.
  • As long as you are receiving a paycheck, you'll need to stay Michigan residents. Otherwise, you will run the risk of evading Michigan taxes which can really cost in terms of penalties and back taxes. Sell the house, retire, and make the first trip to your NEW residence and get new DL, registration, etc.

We use Texas, have been happy with them and find the Escapees to be a great mail service as well as other benefits from being members.

  • Only two I've heard about, Texas and South Dakota.
I read last month that the new gov. of SD is planning on if not stopping RVers, to putting some harsh laws into effect that will tax RVers and fill the government coffers.
Can't remember where I saw it.
