Charlotte NC area campgrounds

Can anyone recommend a clean affordable campground near Charlotte and I-77. Planning to be there near June 20th-21st. Thanks.

I think southeast, something like Matthews???

The closest to you will be either the Fort Mill KOA or going over to Concord. Either way, you are going to have to deal with traffic, no matter which one you pick and the time of day you are moving about. Ft Mill KOA is a typical KOA. Trees, pool, etc. You can cut across a couple of back roads and get on Hwy 51 (Pineville-Matthews Rd). It will be busy, but will be better than getting on 485.

The Tom Johnson Camping "Resort" is a gravel parking lot pit. The Tom Johnson dealership oftens uses part of it as an overflow. They do not own the RV Park, even though their name is on it. If there are racing events going on, then it can be loud. The Zmaxx dragway buts right up to it. The dirt track is not too far away either and of course CMS is right across the street. Best bet from there will be 485 and Schrecker will tell you what a nightmare it can be.

There is no real good way of getting to Matthews unless you are south of it.
  • We recently attended a 4 day national JR ice hockey tournament next to Matthews and stayed at the Tom Johnson RV park at Concord. It was about a 15-20 minute straight shot drive on the bypass to the arena.
After checking RV Park Reviews for the Charlotte area, I wasn't impressed with any of the rest of them. The Johnson facility is next door to the Charlotte Motor Speedway and it is a large well kept facility.

There is a KOA just off 77 near Statesville

Exit 45-- Spent many a Charlotte May race weekend there. Nice pool. Randu
  • Right off the interstate there is the KOA in Fort Mill SC. Further up north by about 45 miles is a KOA in Statesville, NC. There are others that are a short drive off the highway. If you will message me exactly what you need, then I can assist you a little better.
  • My favorite in the area is Ebenezer Park, in Rock Hill, SC. Exit 82 C, toward York, Hwy 161/Celanese Rd.. About 5 miles off the big road, the county park offers spacious sites, FHUs in a gated campground on Lake Wylie. Restrooms are reasonably clean and WiFi works throughout most of the park. No reservation... first come, first served.

My second choice in the area is McDowell Nature Preserve 15222 York Road
Charlotte, NC., another county park w/W&E. There's a KOA at exit 88 in S.C. for their fans. Easy on and off the Interstate.
