- magnusfideExplorer IIDouble ditto on VMI at Lexington VA and Appomattox VA. Visit VMIs cadet chapel too.
Washington & Lee & Lee's tomb as well are worth a stop. - HokiehallExplorerWhile you are at it and if time permits, if you get to Roanoke, head east on US 460 about 70 miles to Appomattox, site of the surrender grounds where the war officially ended.
Of course, if the government is still shut down you won't be able to see much. You can walk around the grounds though. SR 24 that goes through the park has several pull offs so you can walk around. - BigBoy11ExplorerI have not been to all of them but there is a new Civil War museum in Harrisburg, PA and a good one in New Market, VA. You could make a lot of Civil War site stops going South on I-81! Why not visit several?!! Also, Rt.11 parallels I-81 through PA, WV and VA and is another whole new collection of Civil War treasure to explore.
- Doug_and_Cassi_ExplorerVMI in Lexington, VA has lots of civil war history. Robert E. Lee is buried there or next door at Washington & Lee University. I think Traveler is stuffed and on display there too. Also, George C. Marshall Museum is there.
Haymarket also has a museum of civil war history. Appomattox is not terribly far off I-81.
