Country Haven now KOA near Lancaster PA area?

We are looking at staying near Lancaster and touring the Wilmington DE & Philly areas from there. People mention other RV options near this KOA, but didn't identify them. Can anyone provide further info? We stayed at Beacon Hill previously and found it VERY tight. We have a large fiver and want to fit in our space... If you have other suggestions, we would like to hear them. We are trying to avoid the crowded Philly areas till after we park the fiver. Thanks!

Thanks everybody for your input! We will be there in late October. We are finding that several places are already closed for the season. We will need to sprint! We are two seniors, no kids or pets with us. I am, unfortunately a light sleeper; so I really appreciate train and highway noise feedback...

We have camped at Country Haven many times and find very peaceful and quiet - the only sound is often the clip clop of the passing horse drawn Amish buggies. If you asked for a site away from the road you probably wouldn't even hear that! There is no better view of the Lancaster County farmscape. Bathrooms and showers are nice and clean. The owners do enforce their rules, but to us that is a plus, not a minus. Highly recommended! Oh, their website says they close October 31st.
  • I believe that Lum's Pond will be open year round, they have been in the past but closed this year due to construction. Plus it is usually a quiet campground except on holidays.

  • When do you plan on going? If after the early part of June you might want to check out Lum,s Pond State Park in Bear De. They are in the process of upgrading sites to full hook up and the park is wide open and do not think sites will be hard to back into. Not sure when the exact date they will open but for touring the Wilmington area and even the Philly area excluding rush hour not a bad drive. Also the Chesapeake Md. and North East Md. are nice from there to explore also. Enjoy your trip.
  • Thanks Blangen for the heads up on the Philly Park and Ride CG. Could be useful info to me one day.
Country Acres is my go to place in Lancaster.
Old Mill is great if you have young kids and can take advantage of Dutch Wonderland the adjacent amusement park.
Otherwise Old Mill is well run but the sites are a little tight and some are a bit unlevel. Not terrible, but they may require a little maneuvering.

I have never had any issues with Country Acres management.
They have a nice new section with easy to negotiate pull through sites.
  • We stayed at country haven last year and are returning this year. The best thing going for this cg is it is very quiet and in a beautiful location. We tried to get into country acres last year, but it was booked, so we went to country haven.

I've read bad reviews about the owners, and in talking to one of our camping neighbors, it had changed hands and the new owners were more difficult. The biggest complaints about the owners were there was a low tolerance for barking dogs and there were lots of rules around noise. Also, there's not much to do, small playground, no pool, etc. that fit us fine, we don't travel with dogs or kids. Nothing against them, but quiet is nice too. Lots of beautiful walks through Amish country.

If you do go there, get one of the sites that overlooks the valley. Absolutely beautiful!

If you're into it, the Sight and Sound theater is amazing. In fact, that's why we're returning this year. Have fun!
  • Just for the sake of being complete, The Campus Park & Ride is literally 12 minutes from Philly. As they say on their website, they are not a traditional campground... no grass, no trees... nothing but a retired trucking terminal with lots of open, level concrete with good 30 and 50 amp hookups and water. The sewer... well... it was not the plumber's finest hour when the end of the run is a couple of feet off the ground. What I do is park well away from everyone and, every week to ten days, pull up to the dedicated dump station (which is close to ground level) and do my business before returning to my spot out on the other end.

So... this is in an urban/industrial area. Gated access, barbed wire fences all around, staffed 24/7 and more cameras watching the property than you could possibly count. As this is primarily a Park & Ride that caters mostly to UPenn and the hospitals, there are shuttle buses that run on a very frequent schedule (every 5 or 10 minutes) during drive times all the way down to the middle of the night (if you really wanted to) when there is a driver here and ready to go when you want. Bottom line, you have a shuttle service 24/7/365 that goes to the hospitals and bus line from UPenn. That point is also just four blocks from the a subway station and one block from a regional train station.

If you're a train enthusiast, you'll love the 15 (or so) train track switching yard that is just beyond the far end of the property. If you're a light sleeper and an occasional horn toot will drive you nuts... this place is NOT for you. Personally, I kinda like the trains.

By the way... Philly International airport is 10 minutes down the road.

If you're looking for convenient location to Philly City Center, UPenn, the Airport... there is no better location.

Full disclosure: I have no connection to this facility other than I've been here for a few months and decided to take the time to answer those who seem to, often, ask how to best access Philadelphia.

    Safe Travels!
  • You should check out Country Acres Campground. It is on RT30 about 7 miles East of Lancaster, PA. They have some large pull thru sites. I tend to stay in state parks but there are none in the Lancaster area that have camp sites.
