Decisions....Decisions....

Trying to think ahead for next years big trip(s) and can not decide where to go. Too many places and not enough time off!

Some places we would like to go to: Key West, Upper Michigan, Upstate New York (Adirondacks), New York City (not a destination. maybe a day or two), Philadelphia area (not a destination, but wife wants to look around a day or so), Hershey PA (still not a destination), Williamsburg, DC, Colorado, Yellowstone...and more.

We could do a two week trip or two one week trips. I can't make any reservations anywhere until December, when I will be able to pick my vacation time for next year. Time would have to be either during the summer or one week of it during spring break.

Yellowstone would a stretch. It would have to be a 2 week trip and it would be the destination. That would give us a week of travel back and forth and about a week out there. Colorado would basically be the same thing, but more doable. All the others we could handle with a long week trip. 8-9 days. Any ideas or recommendations?
  • When I worked I was in a similar boat, though my vacation time eventually increased to 6 weeks over a long period of time. Personally, I don’t like cities or crowds so the cities would be on the very bottom of my list. I liked to stay somewhere longer than it took me to get there, so when I had 2 weeks I usually tried to keep it to no more than 1000 miles. Yellowstone-Tetons were a favorite and there were many parks closer. Yellowstone, Colorado, the Upper Peninsula and upstate New York would all appeal to me. But I wouldn’t have traveled for 2 weeks to spend a week somewhere.

Key West is unique, we were there in January. But that wasn’t a camping trip; we were visiting a son in Jacksonville. It was another 1,000 mile trip and I didn’t want to go. But the DW did, so we went.:D But I don’t think I’d want to go to southern FL in the summer, I’d be more inclined toward a cooler area.

I also sometimes didn’t have a destination and my object was to just see the country. Then I planned to drive a loop that I could complete within the time I had. I also allowed time to spend a few days in areas I particularly liked so I didn’t feel I was doing an endurance drive. In those cases I might check out a city if it had something to attract me, but I tried to minimize the time I spent there.

No one can plan your trip for you, you’ll just have to weigh the alternatives and go for the one that most appeals to you. Good luck and have a great trip.
  • if you choose PA/NY it will be a lot of traveling to and from. To see NY a lot of folks stay at Liberty Harbor over in Newark NJ...and take public transportation in and out of the city (ferry)... As far as Philly goes... you will have to stay outside the city limits and commute in. I think the closest campgrounds are over in South Jersey or West Chester/Quakertown PA.. Hershey has a nice convenient campground that the park owns and operates that offers a free shuttle to and from the park.. There is also campgrounds farther away but you will need to drive and park at the park..DC - the one we stayed at was Cherry Hill Park.. very nice also with a shuttle that can pick you up at the campground and shuttle into the city.. We just drove over to the subway station ( green belt??) and took it into the city....IF you were to take a 2 week trip you could see all the places mentioned above on 1 vacation... they are just far enough apart to prevent you from hitting them ALL from 1 campground.... • I've never had any experience bringing an RV into New York City but I can only imagine it's a nightmare.

Of the places you posted that interested you I suggest Upper Michigan above all others. If you head up anytime before July it's pretty much perfect temperature wise. T-shirt in during the day (but not too hot) and sweat shirt at night. Not only that but there is lots of beautiful scenery to see. I quite like the Sleeping Bear Dunes which isn't on the Upper Peninsula but it's not too far.
