If you are on the south side and want to go to the beach on the north side, you can cross over the dedicated bike/ped path on the east side of the cable stayed bridge. The views from up there are awesome.
One issue with the south CG is that the roads are very old and have lots of dips and potholes. And when you get decent rain storm events, some of the roads (and sites) are under up to a foot of water. I would imagine the roads in the north CG are all brand new, and I'm not sure if they have any flooding issues there.
The cottages available for rent are also on the north side. They are VERY expensive.
We just returned from a long weekend on the north side. While we didn't experience any rain, I think that anything short of a hurricane or major noreaster would not be a problem...they have built wide drainage ditches between each row of sites that are about 3-5 feet deep. I am thinking it should drain fairly well.
We loved the north side with the exception of one thing....The bathhouses are brand new and sparkling clean...BUT...they have two issues that really should be changed...one is they need to get rid of those stupid waterless urinals! Even though the whole place is clean, its still stinks as a result. Second, for some reason, they didn't include any private changing area in front of the shower stalls...makes it like a high school locker room when it comes to privacy.....there is plenty of room and it would add little to the expense...not sure what they were thinking there... - Doug33ExplorerIf you are on the south side and want to go to the beach on the north side, you can cross over the dedicated bike/ped path on the east side of the cable stayed bridge. - shar3890ExplorerJust came home from there yesterday. What an awesome place. We thought the sites on the North side seemed larger than the South Side. Everything is fresh and new on the North side. The store is on the South side, but there is a store, and seafood market up in the marina area (North Side) which sells the same things as the store on the south side. Hammerheads(bar and restaurant) is also on the North side. There are 2 paths that lead to the beach under the bridge-just like the South side.

The beach is definitely less crowded on the north side, because it has a smaller public parking lot. I imagine sunset is better on the south side, because you see it over the water, where as there is more stuff behind you on the north side (Coast Guard facilities, cabins, a restaurant and marina... etc).
I am fairly certain they rehabbed the south side too though, so I don't think one side is drastically better than the other. - Everything on the North Side is NEW....
- GMandJMExplorerThanks for the info.
North side has a new bath house, someone mentioned? Any truth to that? - On the south side , like stated there is a changing facility , rest rooms , and even a small snack bar. Also on the South side there are life guards... On the North side there is sand and water,...
Both sides have walk ways to put you on the beach from the campground , with the south side having 2.. The walk is close to the same , with the North being a tad bit closer but not really noticeable . .
The South side has 2... 1 that puts you into the parking lot on the South side near the concession stand , and 1 that runs along the inlet.(that's the one we always use to watch the fishermen)
The Sunrise is great on both sides... the sunset is great from the South side , I have never seen it from the North side but I do not think it is as visible due to the trees and shoreline buildings...
