Delaware Seashore

We were thinking of travelling from Buffalo NY to Cape Hatteras, but are now intrigued by Delaware Seashore and possibly parking on an ocean site late Sept. Of course we would still need to stop half way for a night or two. We welcome recommendations. Just the two of us.
  • Temps are still mild along the Delaware Seashore in September. I would definitely consider making reservations if you stay at Delaware Seashore State Park CG. It is very busy due to popular fishing. The walk to the beach is a short one and the view of the inlet and bridge from the CG is very nice. You can also take advantage of the full hookups.
Sounds like a great trip. You will have a great time and the ride thru Delmarva is a stress free ride, great highways, and plenty of places to stop, shop, or rest.
  • Assateague State now allows dogs in the huge southern loop. Check website for details. Also Nascar race weekend Sept 28/29 in Dover will limit availability in the area.
  • if by chance you head down to Indian River Inlet, you will go thru Fenwick Island Delaware. At Seashell city gift shop on the main coastal highway, there is a great museum above the gift shop. Its a must see!

    Hope you enjoy your trip.
My daughter lives in Palgrave and we visit often. Dona
  • Better check availability at DE Seashore/Indian River Inlet. We are going Sept 18 for 4 days and there was very little available when we made reservations a few weeks ago. Of course that includes the weekend, if you can stay during the week you'll probably be ok.
  • There are two Delaware State Parks near (but not right on) the ocean beach - Cape Henlopen State Park north of Rehoboth Beach, and Indian River State Park south of Rehoboth Beach. Both are nice, and within walking distance to the beach, but do not have beach views, etc. Pets are allowed in the campgrounds, but I am not sure about on the beaches.

As others have noticed, there are two campgrounds at Assateaque - the Federal and the State. The State is closer to the beach, has some hookups, but does not allow pets. The National Park has no hookups, but allows pets. As mentioned above, driving on the beach is the best way to access it, but requires a permit.

Weather in Delaware/Maryland should be pretty decent through September, but is probably more reliable beach weather in Hatteras, which is another 6 hour drive south. The most popular campgounds seem to be Camp Hatteras and the KOA in Waves, NC which are both within walking distance over the dunes to the ocean beach - but no beach view. We like Frisco Woods Campground, further down Hatteras Island in Frisco, and it has water views, but on the "sound side", not the ocean. There are limited ocean views from the dune side sites at the National Seashore Campground in Frisco, but no hookups. Like Assateague, beach access is much easier by 4x4 vehicle, and a permit ($50) is required.
  • x3 on Assateague--had a great time there last summer. Fun watching the ponies swim! You can also get a permit to drive on the southern end of the island--think it is around $100 for a seasonal permit--maybe too steep for a short stay. You can let some air out of your truck tires as you drive on and they have an air station to air up as you drive off.

If it was me, I would go another 35 miles further south and go to Assateague National Seashore Park. The wild horses roam free. Oceanside drive in, loops 1 and 2, you can run your generator during the day, but they have quiet time overnight. You just walk over the dunes and you are on the beach.

X2 on Assateague Island National Seashore. Sites in the ocean side campground loops are just over the dune from the beach.

Also there is Assateague Island State park. One loop has electric hookups.

Our favorite campground for Cape Hatteras is in the National Seashore on Ocracoke Island. Also a nice (free) ferry ride to the island.
  • Cape Hatteras will surely be warmer late September than Delaware. Plus, you'll get good deals on Off-Season rates. We typically go to Ocean Waves in Waves NC. It's about a good 45 mins South from the intersection of rtes 64 and 12 S. Have fun whatever you decide. We're gonna hit the Cape for an extended W\E.

Ocean City Sunfest is the weekend of Sept 19 - 22. Food, bands, crafts, etc - if you like that sort of thing. Sunfest

On Assateague, it's more laid back and quiet - very relaxing.

The National Park is $25 per night, no hookups. They do have water available, and a dump station. The State Park section has one or two loops with electric hookups. Not sure what the rates are in the state park section.
