Exploring Hwy 138 from Roseburg, OR

Has anyone stayed recently at the Douglas County Fairgrounds RV Park? Opinions of it? Most recent review on rvparkreviews.com is from July 2012. The other two RV parks on there, Rising River and Twin Rivers, seem fine, but I was just looking for something closer to Hwy 138. We never get an early start for our day tripping, so just wanting to stay closest to 138.

Any suggestions? Even maybe something along the first 20 miles of Hwy 138, if it's a motorhome friendly road. I saw one online named Elk Haven in Idleyld Park. Anyone know this RV park?
  • I know nothing about the parks....I have family that live in the Roseburg area. I CAN tell you about the highway....:) :) WATERFALLS......there are a LOT of waterfalls to see. Some you can see from the parking lots, some you have to hike to. If you can't see it, there will be a sign telling you how long the hike is.

Somewhere around Glide (further east I believe) is "Colliding Rivers" pull off. It's on the left.....It's where 2 rivers collide. Wish I could give you better instructions, but it's not showing on my map. Isn't it amazing.....I stop there every time I go thru and I can't remember exactly where it is!!!!! :) :)
  • That's exactly why I want to drive Hwy 138. I'm kind of a waterfall junkie. I loved the Historic Columbia River Hwy. And someone here (maybe you!) wrote that Hwy 138 is at least, if not more beautiful with waterfalls.

Hopefully someone will chime in about the RV parks. Will be returning home from the Oregon Coast, and will be taking I-5 down into California after Roseburg.
  • Waterfalls
Hwy 138. Toketee, Fall Creek, Clearwater, Watson, Wolf Creek, and Cavitt Creek Falls are some of the nearly two dozen waterfalls along the North Umpqua River. The falls and nearby parking areas, with disĀabled access, are well marked on Hwy 138 beginning about 20 miles east of Roseburg.
You will need your tow or towed vehicles to see most of the waterfalls, most of the waterfalls don't have enough parking space.
Check with BLM and USFS for campground openings and if you can get your RV in them. Google Hwy 138 for more info.
  • Thanks. I've googled and found a few campgrounds, but really wanted to know if anyone has experienced any of them. I do plan to drive my toad for day trippin'.
  • Janss......I can't say anything about the parks you mentioned, but I CAN tell you (since no one is coming up with anything), that this one, On The River Golf and RV park is REALLY nice. If you leave the park and drive up thru Dillard, to Winston, then onto I5 to Roseburg, you're talking about a 30 minute (max) drive. The park is wonderful. We stayed there last summer for my class reunion and I highly recommend it. It's the newest one in the whole Roseburg area.
  • I've stayed at Rising River a few times. The park is on the bank of the Umpqua River with a nice shaded grassy area along the river. There is fair fishing and if the river is not running fast, swimming. The park is clean with friendly management. At first it seems that you are in the wrong place as you go through a RV sales lot to get into it.
  • We have driven the 138 a few times and in Sept we will spend 3 days at Rising River - not been there before but seemed best after doing all my checking around. Goal was to stay as near the 138 a possible as it is waterfalls we are staying for.
  • Thanks for the additional input. Rising River may be my pick, because as stated, like Lauren, I want to be as close as possible to 138.
  • :) I don't blame you -- I'll check out Rising River next time over there. Please let me know how you like it....I may use it myself.
