Finger Lakes, NY

Need help planning a trip next year to the Finger Lakes. We are from NC and need best routing and MUST see things and great campgrounds. Really any info anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. We will be traveling in a 40 ft class A.

Klute Park CG in downtown Watkins Glen is a good location to explore from, no problems with a 40' Class A, It's an urban park so not real scenic, but the lake is across the road. Short walk to stores. Lots of wineries in the area to visit. A couple interesting side trips would be the Glenn Curtiss museum in Hammondsport and the Corning Glass Works Museum in Corning. As previously mentioned Letchworth SP is nice and the campsites are huge. Hike the Watkins Glen trail and also visit Taughannock Falls State Park. Buttermilk Falls SP is also a good place to visit.

Clute is also right on the Finger Lakes Trail. North takes you through some rather steep and challenging terrain. South is much easier. It follows a railroad right of way.
  • We've done both Klute and the KOA. There are some really nice sites in the back of the KOA. This was the first time I saw their premium sites with pavers and real patio furniture. Of course the price reflects this as well.

Klute is convenient to downtown and there's a Walmart right next door. There's also a nice park across the street right on the lake for walking/biking/picnicing. My on complaint about Klute is that the sites are close together. And as with any private park in the area, there's a large faction of seasonals. This doesn't bother us becuse we usually do mid-week.

Be sure to do some wineries and hit Montague's up the hill for good Italian and a great view.
  • From Yadkin county I'd take 77 to 81 all the way. I would also suggest if you have the time to split the trip I would also go to Wellesley Island State Park on the St Lawrence river. Loop F has full hook ups and the boat tours of the island homes are incredible. Don't miss the castles in the river.
  • Letchworth, Corning Glass Museum and the Glenn Curtiss musuem are some of my favorites there.

Our children are in Boston, so we are looking forward to several trips through the area.
