Florida to ????? in May 2017

Well I've been scared off of Yellowstone for May (now thinking September) but am looking for your suggestions for the Month of May?
Need to escape the Sunshine State for a bit.
Will have just returned from Charleston (one of our Fav's.)
Williamsburg/D.C.?? New England??
Thanks

  • Why are you scared by Yellowstone in May? We were there this past May and it was great. The weather during the day was high 50's,low 60's. At night it got into the high 30's.We had not snow and a little rain one night. The crowds were relatively small and we had no traffic jams. We spent 4 nights in Madison Campground. No hookups but dump station and water. We saw a mother grizzly and 3 cubs walking right down the road towards us. She came right past the van and we got some nice video of that. We ate dinner at the Inn at Old faithful. Good food and prices were decent. It is the largest log structure in the world. The lobby is beautiful. Not everything is open. But there is enough to see. We could have spent 2 more days there. If you want suggestions on places to stop over night and which roads to take send me a message and I'll give you a few suggestions.
  • Moab, UT is beautiful and has two National Parks, Canyonlands and Arches. You could go to Mt. Rushmore.
  • Early to mid May is a great time to do the National Parks in Southern Utah.
  • Have you gone to Big Bend? May would be a good time for that. Also all the southern NM and AZ parks. Carlsbad obviously. Sonoran Desert, Chiricahua, Saguaro; White Sands in NM.
  • You could always "follow the blossoms". Time the trip north to follow trees blossoming in different areas: just do an online search for blossom festivals for approximate times.
Unless of course you're allergic :b

Western NC is beautiful in May, so is Eastern TN.
    Shenandoah Valley in VA.
Or a northwest route to Arkansas via Alabama/MS is nice. OR go to MO via AL & E.TN

Plenty of options for that time of year.
  • Go to Shanksville, Pa and on the way visit the New River Gorge Bridge in WV. On the way back south go by Harpers Ferry.
