French Quarter RV Resort - New Orleans

Hi, We're planning on staying at the French Quarter RV Resort in downtown New Orleans the week of April 7, 2014 during the French Quarter Festival. Has anyone stayed at this RV Park? We we booked, the RV Park lady said it was a two block walk to the French Quarter. I looked on google-map afterwards and it's about 7 blocks. I'm looking for tips regarding safe trips back and forth form the french quarter while we're there. I realize that area can be risky after dark, especially walking outside the french quarter. The RV Park does not provide shuttle service as I'm told. Walking is our fist choice, as we don't want to drive a 1/2 mile and try to find a parking spot in a 3/4 Ton Truck. Is it safe to walk???? Just me and the wife.
  • When we stayed there a few years ago we took a cab back after dark. It was recommended to us by the resort. Felt much safer doing that.

In previous threads on this subject, I pointed out that that was recommended by the resort. Folks fussed at me saying it is not so.
and I certainly agree with a previous post recommending that you be alert of your surroundings. When I step out of a business on Bourbon St., and check out my surroundings looking North towards the campground I am aware that the first 2 blocks are well lit, then the last 5-6 are pitch black and not far from an area that could be considered to be crime ridden. thus I checked on my surroundings and decided to take a taxi. :s

  • We travel to New Orleans a lot for conventions and stayed in hotels a lot of different places in and around downtown and have walked all over, including the French Quarter and Bourbon Street wearing suits. We definitely didn't look like locals. I've never had any issue in 6 trips there. I've walked from the French Quarter all the way to the Warehouse District during the evening.

All of that said, it is pretty well known to be very, very careful walking anywhere north of Rampart St and east of Governor Nicholls St. The neighborhood changes very quickly beyond those borders. Between the French Quarter and the RV park is both the Iberville Housing projects and the Louis Armstrong Park. Neither are places you want to be at night. I'd never cut up through the French Quarter and walk to the RV park directly like that. The only way I'd walk to the RV park at night is to head over the Canal street, up to Tulane University on Robertson and then head back east past the St Louis Cemeteries to the RV park. In truth, there really is no reason to not take a cab back at night. It will be all of $5.

I hope you forgot to put a not in your next to last sentence.
