Galveston / Surfside Texas January?

We made this same trip last year...New Orleans, Houston, Galveston and San Antonio. In our opinion, you should skip New Orleans and Galveston. There is nothing in N.O. for us. When we arrived in Galveston, we were never more disappointed in any place....ever. The city is dirty, dangerous looking and forget the beach.....a cesspool of garbage, garbage and more garbage. We absolutely fell in love with San Antonio. A wonderful place for a vacation. I'm sure there are people who will disagree with us, this is just our feelings on these places.

We were in Galveston last January and the weather was cold and rainy but we did NOT find garbage. A nice RV campground is Dellanera RV Park. We then went to San Antonio and enjoyed our stay there at the very end of January and found it a very nice area as well. We enjoyed Travelers World Rv Resort as a good spot for sight seeing in the city. We would like to go back to Galveston when it is a little warmer next time.

We were in Galveston in July and stayed at the beach and
never saw any garbage and never saw any in town going
to several cafes there. I would say Galveston was average
for a tourist town, sure not any worst than others.
Furthermore we have been to Alabama and some of their cities
were way below average.

Wow. I have been going to Galveston for over 20 years and I don't think I would have ever described it this way except after a hurricane possibly. Sorry you were so disappointed. Is it the nicest city around? No, but is it as you describe? Never.

Try the attached it is a good source for weather info on a city. We use it to plan as you are trying to do now. In Galveston we stayed at the state park but they do not have sewer

We lived there for many years and the weather in Jan is
usually 60/70's and windy. It is not crowded at that time
and you shouldn't need any reservations. Lots of things to
do and see. Ride the free Ferry, visit Bishops palace ( built
like a turret castle. One of the best seafood restaurants is
Clary's on Teichman rd, runs off I-45 hwy. A little pricey but
great seafood. Happy Camping :)

As a senior member, I'm sure you know that these threads frequently go off-track on occasion.......especially when someone makes an outrageously negative comment.
However, to try and answer your questions, we traveled down Galveston Island to Surfside Beach every January for the last six years enroute to Corpus Christi. It was an absolute mess after the hurricane, but is coming along very nicely, and is pretty much rebuilt.
Regarding the weather, there is no "typical" weather. We've been through there when temps were in the 70's, and then again when they were in the 40's.......all at the same time of year. To be honest, it's a******shoot.
It is not FULL of Snowbirds (they're called Winter Texans down there) but there are some who winter on the Island. Most, however, seem to be enroute further south, and do a stop off on the Island for sightseeing purposes.
Although you probably won't have problems finding a site, I would make reservations for some of the more popular locations, such as Galveston Island State Park, Jamaica Beach RV Park, and those right in the town of Galveston. Even if you call just one or two days before, you should be able to find something to reserve, but they do tend to fill up later in the day as the travelers decide to stop for the night.
San Antonio will probably be a bit cooler since it doesn't get that warm Gulf breeze to moderate the temps. But again, it's not bad (we're talking light jacket weather here at worst). You'll probably run across crowds on the weekends, but if you do your sightseeing during the week, you shouldn't have any problem at all.

61/50 for average highs and lows for February are a far cry from the Temps you are reporting above
