Galveston / Surfside Texas January?

We are looking at heading from Alabama through New Orleans and Houston to visit friends during late January. We would then drop down to the Galveston / Surfside area for 5-7 days. I have several questions about the Galveston area during late January.
Typically what is the temperature/ weather like?
Is the area typically full with Snow Birds?
Is having reservations important or are the campgrounds empty?
We would then head on over to San Antonio. I would guess that the climate would be the same there. Is this a busy season for San Antonio?
Thanks for your input.
  • Thanks to all. We have made reservations for both areas. We were surprised that San Antonio area books up so far in advance. We are looking forward to the trip.
    Thanks again

Well we live 200 miles north of there now and
have a lot of 60/70 degree temp in the winter
so your chart can be wrong too.

When we arrived in Galveston, we were never more disappointed in any place....ever. The city is dirty, dangerous looking and forget the beach.....a cesspool of garbage, garbage and more garbage.

Wow. I have been going to Galveston for over 20 years and I don't think I would have ever described it this way except after a hurricane possibly. Sorry you were so disappointed. Is it the nicest city around? No, but is it as you describe? Never.

OK, I'll give this city the benefit of the doubt. However, I am not lying. This is exactly what we found when we were there. Maybe we just caught them at a bad time.
  • We spent Christmas 2011 at Galveston. We had a blast. We visited museums, toured a ship, walked around the historic area, had a great Christmas party and New Year's Eve party at the rv park. The state park wasn't back in service although we prefer staying there. We took the rv on the ferry which was pretty cool.

Worth a stop in my book. The same with New Orleans. We found a great park, small and inexpensive for 30 a night, stay a week and get a free night. We were 10 minutes by car from the French Quarter.
  • I remember the hurricane of 09 and there was trash everywhere.
  • Wish I had a pic of hurricane Emily. I live on a river which flows through a major city and ends up at the lake near my house. 600 tons of trash were removed. The city folk were happy their city was left clean :)
